Vive Mexico to Bolster Puerto Vallarta Real Estate

A key driver to Puerto Vallarta Real Estate market is that it’s a tourism magnet. Every year tourists from US, Canada, Europe and other parts of world flock to the shores of Puerto Vallarta. Though layman may be thinking of avoiding investing in the property market, savvy investors are of the view that this is the best time to buy property in Puerto Vallarta. Now, you may be inclined to ask why is that? The reasons are many. The world is still in recession with major economies still struggling with crashed real estate market. Mexico got lot of unwarranted negative press due to swine flu travel warnings. These factors have driven down the demand and prices to historic lows. As anyone familiar with Puerto Vallarta and Mexico real estate on the whole knows, these are just temporary cyclic downturn, and the inherent strength of property market in Mexico. Keep in mind that as soon as news of economy recovering trickles in the prices will rebound. So don’t wait for new lows.

To boost investor’s confidence, Mexican government recently announced «Vive Mexico» initiative. The initiate is aimed at Tourism industry which means that any upward trend in the inflow of tourists will have many spinoffs. First of all the Mexico will benefit directly and subsequently local economy will bounce back.

So what exactly is «Vive Mexico?»

It’s a $90 million campaign to revive Mexico’s tourism industry, which has suffered as a result of the swine flu outbreak.

President Felipe Calderon Monday in Mexico City announced the new campaign, called «Vive Mexico» (Long Live Mexico). Many Mexican celebrities joined in the effort to revive the badly hit Mexico industry. The Mexican President said Vive Mexico campaign is not just a promotional campaign, but a national movement calling for the participation of all Mexican citizens. Many celebrities, like Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, Mexican actor Diego Luna and Mexican football player Rafael Marquez, are expected to take part in the campaign to draw tourists back to Mexico.

The funds allotted to campaign will be used to promote Mexico as a premier tourist destination with unparalleled attractions, locations and beauty. The campaign will mainly target Mexico as a tourist destination in North Americas, Europe and rest of the world. All channels of media like radio, television, print etc will be utilized to carry forth the message of the program. Also, celebrities will be used imaginatively to educate the world about Mexico and its rich culture.

The campaign will aim at boosting tourism this summer season. For the Puerto Vallarta real estate this means that tourism, a major contributor to the real estate market here, will benefit a lot. As tourism recovers, all sections of the economy will be injected with a new breath of life.

So all potential investors are advised to consider all these factors wisely before investing in real estate.

Augmented Reality Will Give US Troops the Upper Hand

Not a day goes by that we don’t read an article or hear about a piece of news involving the latest new gadget in the field. Years ago this would have been the stuff of dreams, or maybe a cool prop in a science fiction movie. Now, the military is heavily invested in augmented reality applications for its foot soldiers and vehicle operators.

The popular technology blog Read Write Web just posted an article, which focuses on military-grade augmented reality apps and how they could redefine warfare as we know it. As the article states, many of us are familiar with augmented reality to some extent. We see it on TV – the 1st and ten line that appear on the field of a televised football game, for example, or the highlighted hockey puck that races around the ice helping us to see it on TV (A little bit of trivia for you…I just learned that the original classic black and white soccer ball was designed for black and white televisions years ago to help viewers see the ball while it was in play).

The military has played a significant role in the early development of the augmented reality industry, and the article discusses one company in particular that is leading the charge for modern developments in the field. Tanagram Partners is a Chicago-based company that is developing prototypes striving to change the face of military combat altogether. Some of their work was presented last week at the Augmented Reality Event in Santa Clara, CA, and in the presentations, attendees learned how the company’s technology could give American troops the upper hand in a hostile situation. They are developing a system of lightweight displays and sensors that would be fitted into soldiers’ helmets. The plan is to have computers, a 360-degree camera, UV and infrared sensors, OLED translucent display goggles and stereoscopic cameras, to name a few, all embedded into a helmet. This will provide a system where soldiers could communicate with a «home base» server that would collect and render 3D information into their heads-up display goggles.

Through these animations, soldiers could be supplied with data on potentially dangerous locales, situations, and buildings in real-time during combat. Tanagram executives hope, with help from augmented reality, troops could better understand their surroundings and be informed about potential threats they wouldn’t otherwise know about.

World Cup Spread Betting – Get Your Football Clubs in Order

Tough new guidelines from UEFA will make clubs operate within their means from the start of the 2012/13 season. The move is set to bring more discipline to club finances and also take the pressure off player’s wages and transfers fees. Clubs will have to compete within their revenue. UEFA believes it will encourage investment in infrastructure, sport facilities and youth academies. It also believes it will help the clubs to sustain themselves in the long term and settle their liabilities in the good time.

The break even clause is a new departure for UEFA whereby the clubs will be monitored for 3 years. They will not be allowed to spend more than they earn from revenue give or take 5 million. They will be able to spend what they like on their stadiums, training facilities, youth academy and their communities.

The huge investments of billionaire owners will be severely cut though. Over the 3 seasons they will only be able to put in 45 million euro over the break even point to help pay wages and transfer fees. This means that if the clubs owners want to go and buy their way into the Champions League they can’t. Sounds good in principle to stop the big clubs splashing the cash but it also stops the smaller clubs like Fulham who have a mega rich owner. They won’t be able to spend anymore of Al Fayeds money above the 45 million euro, the same amount as Mr Abramovich down the road at Chelsea. So suddenly it’s not so fair anymore as Fulham wouldn’t have the same revenue stream as Chelsea or the ways of increasing it either.

At the moment most of the Premier league clubs are alright. But Aston Villa, Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool would all set alarm bells ringing at UEFA with the huge losses they are incurring. It seems the huge debts some of the big clubs are holding won’t be taken into account at the moment. The system will only be used as monitoring tool for the moment and clubs won’t be banned from UEFA competitions. They would first be warned and put under review before been banned.

Another part of the clause states that clubs will not be able to owe money to rivals, players, staff or tax authorities at the end of the season. They’re hoping to avoid what happened at Portsmouth who went into administration owing millions in transfer fees, tax and VAT to name a few. I think I read somewhere yesterday that they had offered to pay their creditors 20% of what they owed them. A recent report on European clubs said that 50% of them where making a loss and that 20% where in serious financial danger.

In other World Cup Spread Betting football news. Michael Essien has failed to recover from injury and has been omitted from Ghana’s squad. Javier Hernandez will become a Man Utd player on 1st July after receiving a work permit and World Cup hosts South Africa beat Colombia 2-1 in a friendly at the Soccer City stadium.

And finally, while South Africa were beating Colombia, the Colombians were having their hotel rooms inspected by two of the employees who relieved them of their money. They were later arrested. Hope security is ramped up just a little bit during the next few weeks. Bonjour.

The False-9 Formation – Back to the Future?

Barcelona has been widely considered as the best team in the world for a number of years now. Winning trophies has been complemented by their unique attacking style of play, which was taught at La Masia (the fabled youth team house where Barcelona students were tutored) for decades. Over the years, Barcelona have usually employed two formations in a flexible manner, regardless of opposition: the base of a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3, with slight tactical variations, but always using the principles of Johan Cruyff’s Total Football philosophy.

As opposition teams have tried to work out ways in which to stop all the attacking talents which the Catalan giants possess, they themselves have needed to adapt, conscious that they must evolve to stay one step ahead of the many defensive tactics now employed to halt their success. The most recent evolution is to line-up without playing a recognised out-and-out striker in a traditional number-9 role, which is leading many to ask: is this the formation of the future?

It sounds ridiculous, on the face of it, to suggest a team plays attacking football without playing any strikers, but that would be to look at formations with a narrow view, not seeing the wider picture. After all, it is not actual formations which are defensive or attacking, but rather the way they are interpreted and deployed by coaches. It is true to say Barcelona now play without use of a traditional striker, but to simply imply that Barcelona now play without an out-and-out goalscorer is not true; they have a very successful one in David Villa, and before him Samuel Eto’o. But in this ‘new’ formation he doesn’t occupy the traditional out-and-out striker role as we know it, starting wide usually on the left hand side. Another player occupies the same role on the opposite side – which has usually been Pedro, which leaves the area where the traditional number-9 in the central area free – or does it?

Lionel Messi, the world’s best player and Barcelona’s number-10 now lines up in the central area where a traditional striker would usually occupy, however in this new formation, once the game begins he often vacates that space by dropping deep – he becomes a ‘false-9’. From this position he is liberated, free from the shackles of having to remain up-front, and in doing so, becoming easier to mark by the centre-back. As he drops deep finding space, he gives the opposition a conundrum; do the centre-backs step out to mark him, and in doing so leave space in behind for the wide forwards to run into diagonally? Or does a central-midfielder pick him up, thus risking being outnumbered in the traditional midfield areas? The positions Messi now takes up compliment his abilities perfectly and gets the best out of his attacking attributes. From this position he has more space to turn, pick a pass, or run and dribble at the opposition, able to both create and score, the fulcrum of the attack – a traditional number-10 role for a modern day fantasista…in the guise of a false-9.

The narrow view that a team must always employ a traditional number-9 figure is something which historically Britain has tended to do. The strong reluctance to dismiss anything other than 4-4-2 has now been widely blamed for England’s failings at recent international tournaments but England have been aware of the false-9 for decades, having painfully witnessed its benefits first-hand over 50-years ago. In 1953 Hungary faced England at Wembley and demolished the home side 6-3, becoming the first team from outside the British Isles to win at the famous stadium. More embarrassing than the actual score-line was the manner of defeat, as England were shown to be technically and tactically inferior with Hungary’s false-9 of Nandor Hidegkuti running riot alongside Ferenc Puskas and Sandor Kocsis, in a formation not too dissimilar to the one Barcelona now use. Although radical changes were made to the English game in the wake of that defeat, a wider acceptance of the false-9 or creative number-10 was forgotten.

So why aren’t every team now following suit with its success?

Back to Spain and the rise of Messi probably helped dictate this formation for Barcelona, more than a conscious decision of its need. With manager Pep Guardiola needing to get the prodigal Argentine in the game as much as possible and to cause havoc from central areas, not just from out wide where he had been usually deployed. Of course there is only one Lionel Messi, but it also helps when you have players in the class of Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, and Pedro who are now joined by Fabregas and Sanchez who can play that style and interchange at will. Could anybody else be brave enough to play with no ‘number-9’?

World Cup 2007 Paradise For Batsmen

Debutants Bermuda were at the receiving end of the highest ever total amassed in the history of the World Cup when they faced India in a Group B match on March 19. Lambs in a slaughterhouse would be an apt representation.

What it also indicates is the fact that the 2007 World Cup so far has thrown up some of the biggest aggregate scores, and half way through in the tournament the numbers are rising steadily.

This is a signal that in World Cup 2007 the average scores will be highest from the previous nine World Cup’s played till now.

In this World Cup till now 37 matches have been played and 13 times more than 300 have been scored, with 14 matches still to be played.

Here’s the most interesting thing is that the big scores smashed by one team were not chased by the opposite team and further the team smashing biggest scores wont loose its all batsman in its innings hitting big scores.

In the match against Bermuda, India went on to score 413/6 in 50 overs surpassing Sri Lanka’s 398/5 in the 1996 Wills World Cup against Kenya.

India also recorded the highest margin of victory in terms of runs in the same match defeating Bermuda by 257 runs.

Also Australia have gone past the 300-run mark thrice in this World Cup till now.

With the batsmen finding the small Caribbean grounds to their liking, teams can also break the record of the highest total in an ODI, which stands in Sri Lanka’s name. The Lankans had scored 443 against the Netherlands at the VRA Ground, Amstelveen in March 2006.

May be this World Cup will see a score in excess of 500 runs in one innings and a batsman going on to hit double century too.

The 2007 World Cup can truly be called a batsman’s tournament seeing the big scores that have been put up on the board.

It is expected that in this World cup batting will show those superb performances with new records, which had never be seen earlier in any World cup. Along with this World cup 2007 will become the history World cup with new and big records by bat, one most important reason to support it is that new grounds in the West Indies are smaller and it will be a nice opportunity for the batsmen to show their big hitting skills.

While big hitters like Mathew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Sanath Jayasuriya, Brain Lara, Chris Gayle, Jacob Oram etc are still there but some big names like Sachin Tendulkar, Virendar Sehwag and Yousuf Yohana have missed a golden opportunity to show their batting skills as their teams were not able to qualify for Super Eights.

In the World cup 2007, there are associate teams like Bermuda, Scotland, Ireland and Canada so everybody wants the top teams to play first so that one can see big scores.

Definitely playing against associate teams is a nice opportunity for the top eight teams to make big scores beating old records.

With the change in the definition of ODI’s, organisers have also changed the pitches that are now overwhelmingly in favour of the batsmen with small boundaries also helping them.

But while the small grounds have been a boon for the batsmen, the connoisseurs of the game lament the lack of an even contest between the bat and the ball.

On the other hand, spectators have also lost interest in the so-called even contest as they want to watch the batsman smashing the ball out of the ground at regular intervals.

The 1999 World Cup saw 300+ score only thrice but the 2003 edition saw teams crossing the 300-run mark nine times and the 2007 World Cup has already seen 300+ scores 12 times.

The fourth World Cup that was hosted jointly by India and Pakistan in 1987-88 saw an average score of 232 and in 2002-03 World cup average scores were reduced to 200 in 50 over matches, the reason being is that match was held in Australia with big grounds and the well bouncing and swinging pitches.

In World cup 1991-92 average scores per innings were decreased to 199 because it was the first WC tournament, which was played with white ball and most of the players go wrong while playing with white ball instead playing with red ball.

But in World cup 2007 highest average scores are expected to be smashed this time. Surprising thing is that in the first 3 world cups, whether matches were of 60 overs still not in a single world cup average score was reached to 225.

How many new records World Cup 2007 will add in favour of batsmen will finally come in front after 28th April, the final match of the World Cup.

Premier League Preview: Manchester United Vs Newcastle

Both Manchester United and Newcastle are beset by injury worries ahead of tonight’s match at Old Trafford.

The match itself could be interesting with Newcastle newly re-promoted to the Premier League drawing one of the toughest opponents in their opening match; they would have preferred not to play the Red Devils at this early stage of the competition.

It is more than eight years since the Magpies last beat Sir Alex’s squad; most games between the sides have been one-sided, although Newcastle did manage a draw in the opening match of the 2008-09 season.

Newcastle would dearly love to return to the days when they were consistently among the contenders for a top four spot.

For Manchester United, the Newcastle game presents an opportunity to announce their title aspirations loudly on the opening day of the Premiership, with an emphatic win over a side that has been a favourite whipping horse in past years.

Last year, the Red Devils finished runners up, no mean achievement given that they were without Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo. Nani and Valencia have proved more than adequate replacements for the Argentine and Portuguese players.

Manchester United had a lot of positives to take away from the Community Shield against Chelsea. Rooney showed signs of return to form after an indifferent World Cup, and Evens and Vidic coped in defence without Ferdinand.

The Old Trafford squad will have to do without Ferdinand, Anderson and Hargreaves, with all three nursing knee injuries. Ferdinand has been injury prone in recent times, causing the England captain to miss the World Cup in South Africa. But it is in United’s interest to have Ferdinand fit and running as soon as possible, as they need his experience in the back-line.

For Newcastle, the match will be a shock transition from the Championships to top flight football. How they perform will determine how well they can cope during the long season. They will be helped in this by a number of players in their ranks with Premier League experience, such as Nolan, Barton and Gutierrez. In Guthrie and Caroll, they have exciting players.

Newcastle United will be without Best and Simpson, both with ankle injuries, apart from Gosling with a knee injury, and Taylor with a shoulder problem.

Smith is uncertain of starting for Newcastle; there might be a late check on his match fitness, as he is reportedly not fully recovered from an ankle injury.

The best that Newcastle can hope for from this match is a point; the Old Trafford squad will try and ensure they bank all three.

The FIFA World Cup is the Most Prestigious Soccer Tournament in the World

FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association and the first FIFA world cup came into being in 1930 in Uruguay. The commencement of the first FIFA world cup was history in the making. The soccer world cup came into being only after the game met with success in numerous other tournaments across the world.

Soccer Championships – Where it all started

The first soccer match ever recorded in history was between England and Scotland in Glasgow in 1872. This was followed by the British Home Championship that was started in 1888 and at this point in time, the popularity of the sport remained within the United Kingdom only. In the early 19th century, soccer started becoming popular outside the UK and was being played largely as a demonstration sport. This simply meant that there were no medals or awards for the taking. In fact, soccer was introduced in the 1900 as well as 1904 Summer Olympics in France and Canada respectively. Only 3 club teams participated in the tournament during both the Summer Olympics. Soccer was also played in the 1906 Summer Olympics also known as the Intercalated Games in Athens and there was participation from 4 teams including 3 clubs.

Following the 1904 Olympics, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was formed. The Federation made an attempt to organize an international soccer tournament between countries that were outside of the Olympic framework. This tournament is considered as the first ever step towards modern soccer championships and this was held in Switzerland in 1906. The sad news is that FIFA declared this competition as a complete failure.

Soccer went on to become an official sport in the 1908 Olympics in England and it was only in 1914 that FIFA started recognizing the Olympic soccer tournament as a «world football championship for amateurs.» Following their acceptance, FIFA agreed upon taking the responsibility of the management of the event. This opened the doors for the first international soccer competition in the form of 1920 Olympics. The champions were Belgium followed by Uruguay in the next two Olympics in 1924 and 1928.

The FIFA world cup

The success of soccer in Olympic tournaments made FIFA reconsider their dream of organizing an international championship. With President Jules Rimet heading from the front, the FIFA congress in a meeting at Amsterdam in 1928 decided to organize a world championship. The host country for the first FIFA world cup was named as Uruguay since they were two time Olympic Champions. So in 1930, the first FIFA world cup came into existence. The first soccer world cup saw participation from 13 countries including 7 from South America, 4 from Europe, and 2 from North America.

The first FIFA world cup matches were held simultaneously on 18 July 1930 and the winners were France and USA. Uruguay went on to become the champions by defeating Argentina 4-2 in front of a 93,000 strong home crowd in Montevideo. The FIFA world cup is played once every 4 years with 32 teams participating for the trophy.

The last FIFA world cup (2006) was held in Germany and Italy was crowned as the champions. The next FIFA world cup (2010) is going to be held in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010.

Hull City Football Club – How to Rile Leeds United Even More!

Have you ever wondered how easy it is to wind up Leeds United and their fans even more? Please allow me to share with you the latest snippet of transfer speculation coming out of Hull City Football Club. Ah yes, the power of the internet and publication. Don’t you just love it?

This would be funny if it was in fact deemed to be true. Indeed, at this stage it hasn’t been confirmed or denied as such by any party, so we can take the latest rumour being punted around national media circles with some genuine cause for debate. Could the Tigers really be about to rub yet more salt into an already gaping Leeds United wound?

Following Hull City Football Club’s stellar 2-2 draw with the Lillywhites at Elland Road on Tuesday evening – secured with just 10 men by the way – Leeds United were left far from happy with Hull City skipper Ian Ashbee. Well, that and the fact Bradley Johnson’s comedy own goal gifted the Tigers a point for our injury ravaged and numerically depleted side, thus costing the home team two more valuable points. Sweet…

But as stated above, adding more fuel to an already raging fire in the Leeds camp was City legend Ian Ashbee for an alleged elbow planted square in Luciano Becchio’s face. Apoplectic at the apparent actions of the Tigers’ no.4, Leeds United lodged a formal complaint with Football League, because no action had been taken by the match referee Kevin Friend at the time, leaving Becchio requiring treatment.

That news has angered Leeds United who have retaliated to the official response by posting video footage and a picture of Becchio’s black eye on their official website. But surely, this can only be viewed as frustration by the West Yorkshire side, after the referee decided no further retrospective action would need to be taken – thus rendering the Lillywhites without a case.

Yet, the funniest thing of all is; Hull City Football Club are set to provoke the West Yorkshire club further with their own latest actions. In what would be seen as a real poke in the eye, Nigel Pearson is reportedly contemplating a swoop for the Argentine striker during the January transfer window. That move to take Leeds United’s star striker away from Elland Road, would severely weaken their rivals striking options – particularly as Jermaine Beckford moved to Everton in the summer. Nice one Pearson!

Buenos Aires – A Bargain Hunters Dream!

Not very long ago the currency of Buenos Aires was tied to the US dollar. While this fabulous city offered great panache and European flair, it had spiraling inflation and was as pricey to visit as any other major metropolis. That all changed in 2002 when the Argentine Peso was liberated to float on its own and experienced a significant devaluation. In the five years since, while the Peso has slowly gained in value, Argentina has become the darling of jet set travelers flocking to bargain shop in trendy boutiques filled with European designer goods, dine in world class restaurants and learn to Tango.

So what makes this city such a magnet for those in the know? Quite simply, the city sizzles! Often called the Paris of South America, the streets hum with the exuberance of a culture that has embraced its uniqueness and has rediscovered its youthful vitality. Buenos Aires enjoys a vibrant cafe society where

artisans mold works of vibrant color, musicians old and young revel in the music of the street, and nothing seems more important than gathering with friends to discuss the news of the day.

Fashioned by immigrants from Europe, the architecture of Buenos Aires evokes feelings of Rome, Paris and Barcelona. The city is home to numerous landscaped parks, a world famous opera house, well respected museums, magnificent churches and broad avenues filled with trendy shops selling designer goods at a fraction of their Euro prices. Tango bars and techno clubs abound to make Buenos Aires one of the great nightlife cities of the world. And do not leave without purchasing some of their world famous custom crafted leather goods.

So let’s review 7 reasons why you should hop on a plane to Buenos Aires as soon as you can:

1)It is a fun, sophisticated city with museums galore, cafes for dining, boutiques for shopping, on streets that could have been lifted straight from France or Spain.

2) The tremendously good rate of exchange means all your activities and purchases will be a terrific value.

3) Because Argentina is in the southern hemisphere, they have summer when we are having winter. January, February and March see temperatures averaging 80 degrees. Likewise, when we’re hot and steamy in summer, they are having temps in the 60’s.

4) Shopping is divine, with supple leathers and designer clothes being the best bargain.

5) Dining is world class. Try their famous Argentinean Beef at incredible prices.

6) The nightlife positively sizzles to a Tango beat.

7) For all you sports fans, no one loves their football (soccer) more than Argentines! Soccer, polo and horse racing are much loved as well and draw huge crowds. You may want to bring along your golf clubs, as BA is home to several exquisite golf courses.

All this and great prices too – incredible! Where else can you find five star hotels for only $200 a night; or gourmet dinners at upscale restaurants for only $25 per person? It’s time to move Buenos Aires to the top of your MUST SEE list!

London 2012 Olympics: The Return of Uruguay’s Soccer

Land of Champions

Universally famous for its talented footballers, the South American republic of Uruguay will compete in the men’s Olympian soccer championship in the Briton capital of London in July and August 2012, after a 84-year absence in the Olympiad. Along with Brazil and the host country, it is one of the «heavy-favorites» to win the crown in the multi-sport event, an Olympic title won by Pedro Cea and his fellow Uruguayans in the 1920s (a couple of years prior to winning the Inaugural World Cup). Curiously enough Uruguay would have won more medals, but in the middle of the 1970s it refused to attend the Montreal Games and then an international boycott deprived the country of the opportunity of making an Olympian appearance in the former Soviet republic of Russia.

Olympic History

By mid-1924, the national side left Montevideo (country’s capital city) for Paris to attend the Games of the VIII Olympiad. There, with passion and discipline, Uruguay’s team made headline news across the world when it was the champion in the men’s football tournament, ahead of Switzerland ( silver) and Sweden (bronze). In the meantime, it also became the first non-European team to receive the global title. Uruguay’s roster included footballers such as Andres Mazali, Pedro Arispe, Jose Vidal, Santos Urdinaran, Pedro Petrone, Angel Romano, Umberto Tomasina, Alfredo Zibechi, Jose Nasazzi, Jose Leandro Andrade, Alfredo Ghierra, Hector Scarone, Pedro Cea, Jose Naya,Pedro Casella, Luis Chiappara, Pedro Etchegoyen, Zoilo Saldombide, Pascual Somma, Fermin Uriarte, Pedro Zingone, and Antonio Urdinaran.

In the wake of its triumph in Western Europe, they were received as national heroes in their homeland country, at that time one of the most prosperous nations in the Spanish-speaking world.Over the years that followed, the peaceful republic of Uruguay was able to defend successfully its global trophy, gaining the admiration and respect of the world.

In the pre-Olympic year 1927, the Football Continental Cup had been won by the Argentine side after their win over Uruguay. Nonetheless, shortly after, these results changed in the Summer Olympics in the Netherlands. In a South American duel, the Uruguayan squad came first in the Olympiad upon their historic victory over Argentina 2-1 in the gold-medal match. Prior to the finals, the host nation and Germany were eliminated by the Uruguayan side. In Amsterdam (Holland), the Olympian winners were Andres Mazali, Pedro Arispe, Lorenzo Fernandez, Antonio Campolo, Pedro Petrone, Santos Urdinaran, Hector Scarone, Juan Arremon, Roberto Figueroa, Jose Nasazzi, Jose Leandro Andrade, Alvaro Gestido, Pedro Cea, Hector Castro, Adhemar Canavesi, Juan Piriz, and, Juan Peregrino Anselmo, Venancio Bartibas, Fausto Batignani, Domingo Tejera, Angel Melogno, and Rene Borjas.

Without Olympic Medals

During the 1930s and 1950s, the country’s squad earned the FIFA Cup twice; the last time with a stunning win against the host nation in Rio de Janeiro. As well as being world champion and nine-time winner of the South American contest, they also earned five Intercontinental events, eight Libertadores cups, seven Junior Continental championships (1954-1981), and one gold medal in the 1983 Pan American Sports Games (by defeating Brazil in the semis). It was really interesting. Yet despite these global achievements, the country’s sportsmen could not compete for the Summer Olympic Games.

The Return of Uruguay

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, tiny Uruguay had been plagued by political violence, financial crisis (budget deficits), mismanagement, and other social problems. But Uruguay’s nightmares did not stop. Additionally, this former Spaniard colony, once called «the Switzerland of the Americas», began a war against rebel groups. But these problems came to a head when the nation’s anti-Marxist Head of State Juan Maria Bordaberry was overthrown in a coup in the latter half of the 70s. Soon afterwards, a heavy-handed military rule was installed for a 11-year period. As a consequence of this atmosphere, sport was gradually losing its status. Over the next few years, thousands of soccer players had been forced to play outside Uruguay, mainly in Argentina and Western Europe. Meanwhile, the country’s teams also had hurdles to make trips abroad.

Uruguay’s football – often referred to as one of the world’s finest squads– apparently appeared to emerge from its crisis in 1976. In February of that year, after some early successes in the Continental Tournament on Brazil’s northern coast, the national side gained a berth at the Montreal Games following a 48-year period of decline. During these decades, astonishingly there were not Uruguayan squads in the Summer Games, being defeated by Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Paraguay in the Continental Olympic Qualification tournaments.

Nevertheless, the 1976 team inexplicably declined to go to Quebec, Canada, losing an important chance to capture one of the three Olympian medals in the amateur event. Later that year, the men’s football team failed to qualify for the FIFA World Tournament for the first time. Over the following period, soccer continued to face many obstacles: Prior to participating in the 1980 U.S.-led boycott of the Moscow Olympics because of its complex relationship with the Soviet Bloc, the country’s sports officials refused to compete in the Pre-Olympic Cup in Colombia, which gave Olympian tickets to South America. During this same period, Uruguay’s participation in the VIII Pan American Sports Games was suspended despite being the winner of the 1979 Junior Continental event.

The authoritarian government was brought to a close in 1985 when Julio Maria Sanguinetti won the multi-party polls. During the decades that followed, Uruguay’s democratic society began a new period with good news in many aspects.

Traditionally, South America is the «big favorite» in the Olympic championships. By 1988, Brazil assembled a squad of top footballers such as Romario, Bebeto, and Tafarell, who were runners-up in the Olympiad in Korea, a medal that Brazil had won in 1984 in Southern California. In the second half of the 1990s, Argentina was second and Brazil, with its global star Ronaldo, third, respectively. In the following century, Ivan Zamorano — one of South America’s finest footballers– and his fellow sportsmen helped Chile to win its only medal in the Games in Oceania. Then, Argentina won two consecutive titles; by 2008 the Argentine side led Latin America to its fourth Olympic gold medal in Beijing. Aside from this, Paraguay’s football players earned the silver medal in the 2004 Modern Olympics in Greece’s capital city of Athens. At London 2012, South America is represented by Uruguay and Brazil.

The national squad won the right to attend the London 2012 Games after finishing second in the South American Youth Championship in early 2011 on Peruvian soil. During the regional tournament, Uruguay’s contingent made history when it defeated Argentina -twice Olympic gold medalist, 2004 & 2008 — 1-0. The Uruguayan Olympic Committee probably will send the following footballers to London 2012: Diego Polenta (who plays in Italy), Adrian Luna, Matias Vecino, Diego Forlan (the country’s best athlete in this century), Federico Rodriguez, Pablo Capellini, Matias Jones, Ramon Arias, Nicolas Prieto, Camilo Mayada, Leandro Cabrera (plays in Spain), Luis Machado, Luis Suarez ( one of the world’s top players), Alvaro Pereira, and Sebastian Gallegos (plays in Spain).
