Lambeau Field

Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers! This stadium and team has one of the richest histories of all of NFL history. It was the very first stadium built exclusively for a NFL franchise. Though it was originally called ‘City Stadium’ until 1965 after the death of the much beloved founder of the Packers Curly Lambeau it was renamed.

Curly Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun founded the team in 1919. Lambeau played for the Packers in their early years and was the coach until 1949. Curly Lambeau led the Packers to six NFL Championships during his tenure.

Also known as the ‘Frozen Tundra’

The nickname of ‘Frozen Tundra’ was first spawned by the infamous NFL Championship game in 1967 between the Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. Bill Woodson in his narration, coined the phrase ‘frozen tundra’ during the NFL Championship game in 1967 which also became known as the ‘Ice Bowl’. The famous game was played in temperatures as low as -13F along with high winds.

The Lambeau Leap

No article about Lambeau Field would be complete without a mention of the ‘Lambeau Leap’! LeRoy Butler was the first to do the leap into the arms of adoring fans after he scored a touchdown during a game in 1993. Robert Brooks, another fan favorite became known for his leaps into the stands as well. Many teams have tried to imitate the Lambeau Leap and some have even attempted a ‘leap’ of their own in Lambeau Field itself! Faithful fans were disturbed by this and was the talk of many talk radio and news/sports shows in the week before and after the incident with Cincinnati Bengals player Chad Ochocino. To be fair, Ochocino did ask the fans before he did it the week before the game. With mixed reviews he did do the ‘leap’ into the arms of Bengal fans.

The Fans-Cheeseheads

You can’t talk about Green Bay Packers without a quick mention of ‘cheeseheads’either! Cheeseheads (or Wisconsinites) love their Packers! Packers fans are known throughout the league as the most loyal of all the NFL franchises. No doubt you have seen the many ‘cheeseheads’ in the stands of a Packers game! President Obama recently atuographed a cheesehead the secret service confiscated at a speech and it was recently donated to a local museum. The fans appreciate the rich history of Lambeau Field with football greats as Curly Lambeau, Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr, Jerry Kramer, Reggie white, Ray Nitschke, Jim Taylor, Bret Favre, and many others who have graced the field and guided the team to victory.

Packers Products

Packer products are always in high demand due to the nature of Packers fans. Maybe because the Packers are the only publicly owned team in the NFL the fans feel such fierce loyalty to ‘their’ team and indeed it is their team! The fans literally own the team through the last stock sale in 1997/98 where fans bought stock and raised raised over $24 million, money used for the Lambeau Field redevelopment project. Throughout the year one can see Packers products in WI and elsewhere on hats, coats, clothing, etc, even tractors bear the logo of the Green and Gold! During the holidays Packers products are always in high demand and many homes wake up to gifts bearing the Green Bay Packers logo under their tree on Christmas morning. Lambeau Field is always a hot product and the perfect gift for any Packers fan. This renowned stadium in art is a unique way to show your loyalty to the rich history of the Green Bay Packers. Many are already familiar with sports artist Andy Goralski and his many pieces depicting football greats such as Brett Favre, John Elway, Walter Payton and many more. Goralski has recently released his new piece titled «From Leather to Legendary» which illustrates the days of yesteryear with Curly Lambeau’s Acme Packers in front of the newly renovated Lambeau Field. This fine are limited edition would be the icing on the cake for any Packers fan under the tree this Christmas, Father’s/Mother’s Day or birthday and would make a great addition in their sports room.

Football and Wisconsin

The legendary Lambeau Field is an important part of Wisconsin history and has defined what football is really about. The teams change over the years but Lambeau Field and its unique history will stand as a testament of fan loyalty. Should you wish to purchase season tickets for the Green Bay Packers you may want to put your name in now because the tickets are sold out for about the next 35 years or so! That is how loyal Packers fans are to the team and to the history of Lambeau Field!

Go Packers Go!

Never Trust Free Sports Betting Tips

Placing a bet on your favorite sports team is easy, but placing a winning bet would not be that easy. Winning 10 out of 10 bets you make is like striking a bullseye time and again. Unless you have the right information and some ‘insider’ news, you will never have a long winning streak without breaking it. There are many tips and advice out there that gamblers can make use of to make their best bet. However, their best bet might not be the best after all. That is because free information is never accurate. Who would sell their tips for ‘free’ when it is earning them big bucks?

Do you know where the losers’ money goes to after they lose their bets? The money lost will naturally end up in the winners’ pockets. Nobody wants to be a loser right? However, there are still people out there looking for what seems to be ‘real’ and ‘free’ information only to end up losing their money.

So, why is such free information being distributed so widely when it is obvious that it is a bogus? That is because the winners never want the losers to win. If everyone wins, betting organizations will soon go bankrupt and no more such organizations will ever want to accept anymore bets.

How many times have you stumbled across forums and websites that claim to provide the best betting options? How many times have you heeded their advice and only to lose everything that you have bet on? Have you ever wondered how people can be on a winning streak? Do you really think that they are telling you what the winning bets are?

Anything that sounds too good to be true usually is. Free information can only be regarded as a reference and nothing more.

Want some good betting advice? You will have to pay a price of course.

Soccer Fixture: Chelsea Versus Arsenal

Chelsea and Arsenal met in the First Division of the Football League at Stamford Bridge for the first time on the 9th November, 1907 – 30 years after the stadium had first been opened for use by the London Athletic Club. Chelsea won 2.1 with both goals scored by George Hilsdon. Arsenal’s reply came from Charlie Satterthwaite.

George Hilsdon was the first player to score 100 goals for Chelsea and a weather vane modelled on him can still be seen at Stamford Bridge. Legend has it that Chelsea will suffer ‘great misfortune’ if it is ever removed, as it was during ground works in the late 1970’s when Chelsea were in financial and football decline. Hilsdon was the victim of a gas attack on the Western Front in WWI and never played professional football again, dying in 1941. His grave is unmarked.

This first match was watched by a then record crowd for England’s top division: 65,000. Arsenal were still known as and based at Woolwich Arsenal at the time but they had a huge away following for this match due to it also being the 66th birthday of King Edward VII. The munitions factory – where many of the workers who followed the club were based – was closed for the day, hence they were free to travel to West London.

In fact, Arsenal could have been more local rivals of Chelsea than Tottenham Hotspur. A local businessman – Henry Norris – had a significant role in the development of both clubs. Amassing a fortune from property Norris became a Director and then Chairman of Fulham. Another Edwardian businessman called Henry – Henry Augustus Mears – had acquired Stamford Bridge with a view to it becoming one of the finest venues for association football in the capital if not the whole country. He offered Norris the chance to move Fulham FC to the ground but Norris refused to pay the annual rent of some £1500 and so Mears created his own team – Chelsea FC – in 1905. Had Norris not been so careful with his money, there might not have been a Chelsea football club at all.

Five years later Norris, still Chairman of Fulham became a majority shareholder of Woolwich Arsenal which had gone into voluntary liquidation. Becoming Chairman of that London club too, Norris proposed merging them with Fulham to form a super-club. The move was blocked by the Football League and so Chelsea and Fulham remained local rivals rather than Chelsea and Arsenal.

This match between the two teams in 1907 was the first ever to be played by two London clubs in the First Division and so the first major ‘London derby.’ All subsequent league meetings between the two sides to date have been in the top tier of English football (the old First Division and now the Premier League).

Woolwich Arsenal got their revenge the following season with a 2.1 win on 28th November, 1908 – Chelsea’s goal coming from George Hilsdon again. The Gunners won on Chelsea turf in the season after that as well, before the first draw – 1.1 – in this league fixture on 15th February, 1913. This was the last time the two sides met before Woolwich Arsenal moved to Highbury and changed their name to Arsenal.

Indeed, after that win in their first meeting, Chelsea did not win the fixture again until 13th December, 1919 when they won 3.1 with goals from Robert McNeil, John Cock and Henry Ford in front of a huge post-war crowd of 60,000.

The fixture on 12th October, 1935 was played in front of another enormous crowd: 82,905, which was the second highest recorded attendance for an English league match. It finished in a 1.1 draw. Joseph Bambrick scored for Chelsea and Jack Crayston for Arsenal.

Arsenal’s record league win at Stamford Bridge came in front of 74,667 football fans on 29th November, 1930 – a 5.1 victory, with David Jack scoring a hat-trick as Arsenal moved closer to their first League Championship win and domination of English football in the 1930s. They scored five times again on 24th November, 1934 – in a 5.2 victory this time – with legendary Arsenal centre-forward Ted Drake scoring four of Arsenal’s goals. Drake would go on to manage Chelsea in 1952 and was largely responsible for changing their nickname from The Pensioners to The Blues.

The Gunners also scored five goals in a 5.3 win on 29th October, 2011 with Robin Van Persie scoring a hat-trick for the victors.

Chelsea’s largest win in the fixture came in a 6.0 win in the Premier League on 22nd March, 2014 which was also Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger’s 1000th game in charge. This is the highest number of goals Chelsea have scored against Arsenal in a league fixture at Stamford Bridge and also represented the biggest margin of victory by The Blues. Oscar scored two goals that day alongside one each from Samuel Eto’o, Andre Schurrle, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah in front of an attendance of 41,614.

The sides are neck and neck in terms of wins in this fixture. In the years when Chelsea have gone on to win the League Title they have never lost at home to their rivals from North London, drawing the matches in the 1954/55 and 2004/05 seasons and winning each of them in 2005/06, 2009/10 and 2014/15.

For Arsenal, in the 13 seasons where they have finished as League Champions, they have only lost at Chelsea on two occasions (Chelsea were in the Second Division in the 1988/89 season so there was no fixture) – on 29th August, 1970 when Paddy Mulligan and John Hollins scored for Chelsea and Eddie Kelly got one back for Arsenal – and on 2nd February, 1991. Kerry Dixon and Graham Stuart scored for Chelsea that day with Alan Smith replying for Arsenal in front of a crowd of 29,094. This was the only league defeat of the season for George Graham’s Arsenal team and their first in 27 First Division matches, stretching back to a 2.0 loss at Luton Town on 21st April, 1990.

What Happened In The UK In 1996?

Breaking 1996 down into the biggest news, sports and entertainment events; here’s what happened…

Two tragedies hit the hearts of Britons in 1996, the nation’s sympathies going out to the people of Dunblane and Manchester. In Dunblane, a crazed gunman went on a shooting spree in at a local infant school, killing an entire class and their teacher. Later in the year, as a direct response to those ill-fated events, the Government announced that it would be outlawing almost all handguns in the UK.

In Manchester, a huge bomb devastated its busy central shopping area just as it was filling up with eager Saturday shoppers. Police managed to start an evacuation before it blew up but scores of people were still killed or injured in the blast. Such was the damage caused, that the episode led to a total regeneration of Manchester city centre.

Also hitting the news in ’96 was the introduction of the first genetically modified (or GM) food to go on sale in British supermarkets. Modified tomato puree was the cause of all the fuss with some critics dubbing it a «Frankenstein food».

The world of sport was dominated by England’s hosting of the European football championships (Euro ’96). The England v Scotland group stage match drew much attention with Gazza’s wonder goal eventually stealing the win for the home team. Cheered on by home support, the ‘Three Lions’ made it all the way to the semi-finals, the nation going football crazy as it looked as if England were really going to win a major tournament for the first time since ’66, then, as really should have been expected, they lost on penalties to Germany.

Entertainment wise, carrot topped Chris Evans re-invented the chat show format with his hit show ‘TFI Friday’.Presenting celebrity gossip, the hippest bands and lad friendly guests, this unscripted, chaotic program briefly made Evans the most sought after man on TV. Over on the BBC, a group of thirty-something lawyers were gaining huge ratings; ‘This Life’ being a bit like the American ‘Friends’ but with much more ‘bad’ behaviour and saucy goings on.

The big screen was blessed with one of the jewels of the British film-making crown, ‘Trainspotting’. Despite featuring heroin, needles, vomit and disgusting toilet bowls, this was the coolest thing of the year and took Ewan McGregor from nowhere to ‘Star Wars’. The more family friendly film of 1996 was ‘Toy Story’; it being the first feature length movie ever to be animated entirely by computer. The results were quite stunning and people flocked to see ‘Woody’ (a pull-string cowboy) and ‘Buzz Lightyear’ (a high-tech space ranger) battle it out to become little Andy’s favourite toy.

The Sport of Cheerleading and Its Evolution

Before cheerleading became an integral part of professional sports as a way to help fans cheer on their team, it had its beginnings at the collegiate level. Through many decades it has evolved not only as a competitive sport in its own right, but has served as an emissary to bring attention to charitable causes and offer support in a variety of ways.

Cheerleading had its origins at the University of Minnesota. The very first cheerleader was a University of Minnesota student named Johnny Campbell. During a football game he stirred up the crowd by cheering, «Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-so-Tah!» The date was November 2, 1898. The university later put together a cheering squad made up of six male students who continued using Campbell’s original cheer. Although cheerleaders were originally all-male squads, by 1923 females were being incorporated and eventually made up the majority of participants. Cheerleading soon began including routines such as tumbling, gymnastics, and the use of megaphones during football games.

In 1948, a former cheerleader at Southern Methodist University named, Lawrence Herkimer, formed the National Cheerleaders Association. It was created to hold cheerleading clinics, and by the 1960’s, college cheerleaders hosted workshops across the nation teaching the fundamentals of cheering to teenage girls in High School. In 1965, Fred Gastoff, invented the vinyl pom-pon which was introduced in competitions hosted by the International Cheerleading Foundation. Today it is known as the World Cheerleading Association. Organized cheerleading competitions sprouted everywhere until 1978 when CBS broadcast the first Collegiate Cheerleading Championships, bringing wider attention to the sport. Although cheerleading rarely got much attention during the 1960’s, and cheerleaders were not exactly a reason to watch football, what did begin to emerge were organized professional cheerleading teams.

Before they became the famed Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, the Dallas Cowboys had a cheer squad made up of male-female high school students called CowBelles & Beaux. During the 1970 football season, Cowboys manager, Tex Schramm, decided to completely overhaul the cheerleaders, making them an all-female squad over the age of 18, redesigning the uniforms, creating new dance style cheer routines, and forming an overall sexier look in hopes of boosting attendance. The women not only had to be attractive and have athletic abilities when they auditioned, they also needed to possess raw talent as performers. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders made their first appearance on the sidelines during the 1972-1973 NFL seasons. Since then, they have appeared on many television shows, toured throughout the U.S. and overseas, and have made regular appearances in the USO tours to support our troops.

Modern cheerleading has changed dramatically from its original function of spurring an audience to show their support for the team. It has become a sport in itself, competing outside of sporting events as well. Cheerleaders are found in most American middle schools, high schools, and colleges with organized squads made up of students. Cheerleading scholarships are even offered by colleges that compete at cheerleading competitions.

Cheerleading squads began to emerge in the 1980’s that didn’t have an association with a school or sports league. Their main objective was solely competition. Divisions and teams were created and sponsored by many different organizations and companies. The competitions are judged based on the difficulty and execution of the routines that include jumps, stunts, tumbling, creativity, showmanship, synchronization, and overall routine performance. These all-star team competitions are broadcast to global audiences that have led to thousands of cheerleading participants from countries worldwide.

Professional cheerleading has taken cheerleaders beyond the sphere of cheering at games. It has broadened their horizons doing charity work and philanthropy, television performances, advertising, modeling, and motivational speaking. Cheerleading has come a long way.

EPL Team Profile – Manchester United

The club’s formal name is Manchester United Football Club, or Manchester United FC.

They are also referred to, popularly, as the Red Devils. Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR FC, the squad train at their home venue of Old Trafford, with its capacity of nearly 76,000. Owned by the Glazier family, the squad have Joel and Avram Glazer as co-chairmen, and Sir Alex Fergusson as manager.

Manchester United have won the most league titles, 18, a record they share with Liverpool. However, unlike Liverpool, who haven’t won a single Premier League, the Red Devils have won in 11 of the 17 Premiership seasons, so far.

In the ongoing season, United have won two of three matches played and are currently third on the League table behind Chelsea and Arsenal.

Early Season Preview:

Manchester United would want to win the Premiership this season, for more than one reason. Apart from the obvious need to establish themselves as the best team in the fray, the squad know that this could be Sir Alex Fergusson’s last year, at the helm. And that the Premier League title could be the perfect parting gift.

In fact, this is Fergie’s 25th year, and even after a quarter century in charge, his motivation is intact. The Community shield, the traditional curtain raiser to the season, saw United lifting the trophy, by beating Premier League defending champions, Chelsea. Was that a teaser trailer of bigger things to come?

This is the Red Devils’ current line-up: Van der Sar, Vidic, O’Shea, Evra, Jonathan Evans, Scholes, Nani, Giggs, Fletcher, Rooney, Berbatov, Kuszczak, Smalling, Owen, Hernandez, Carrick, Valencia and Rafael Da Silva.

Wayne Rooney has returned to the League after a forgettable World Cup, and he will want to put those memories behind him, the best way he knows — by scoring goals. Rooney’s form, as ever, will determine how the Old Trafford outfit shape up in their Premiership campaign.

Sir Alex has had the legendary knack of spotting little known players who have gone on to do brilliantly in top flight football. Javier Hernandez, signed this summer, belongs to this breed. Hernandez did well in South Africa, and has looked good in his short tenure with the Red Devils. Apart from Javier, Fulham’s defender Chris Smalling is another summer signing of promise. In departures from Old Trafford, United have sold Ben Foster.

The Premiership, in recent years, has become a two-horse race, between Chelsea and Manchester United. This year, I expect it to be a three-pronged affair, with Arsenal providing the third side to the triangular contest. From the evidence of the matches played so far, I would back the Red Devils to mount a serious challenge for the title.

Tips for Football Betting

How depressingly gray would be a world where everything is governed by a set of universal rules rigorously shaping everything? Isn’t it better if we strike back with a chance to confound the tweed coated straight laced brigade and weave a little exotic odds into life that are not really approved of. It is precisely this change that inspires even the most sober of us to risk a couple of quid. But the art of a successful competition is to not only create a game that has a real chance of success for the entry stake, but allows us to lose that stake without significant damage to our ongoing lifestyle. Placing bets on football matches using various tips and tactics helps us achieve this motive.

In this article we shall thus discuss about the major tips and tactics that help us make the best of our money. Football betting is not like the other traditional casino games. Those games are games of chance where the house always has a built-in edge. Football betting is different in that you can choose which games to wager on and which games to pass on. By only betting on games that have a positive expected return and passing on games that have negative expected return, the football betting enthusiast can thus turn the tables on the sports book and put himself in the position to always have the edge.

Basic knowledge of sports handicapping is required

Football betting requires a basic knowledge of sports handicapping. You need to understand what goes into determining the spread and how to arrive at an educated guess at the game outcome. Football handicapping is part science and part art. The best football handicappers not only know how to analyze the statistics, they also have an instinct gained from years of experience. To acquire these skills and instincts the punter needs to do handicapping for him self using picks and recommendations from other bettors as simply a starting point.

Handicapping is all about acquiring and using the right information

Handicapping is all about acquiring and using the right information. You are attempting to predict the future. You do that by looking at what has happened in the past, which is where statistics are useful, and by looking at the current situation, which is where the latest news is critical.

However one should always remember that even the best handicappers are rarely right more than 58% of the time. Our goal should be to win more than 50% of the bets.

The Liberian National Soccer Team And The Under-23 Lost Vital Games

Unless the necessary programs are put into place, and politics and personal interests are put aside from the game of football, those who control football and the national football teams will continue to bring disgrace to Liberia.

The Liberia Football Association keeps creating the avenues for more whipping of our various national teams. Over the weekend, the senior and Under-23 national teams suffered heavy defeats in two international football competitions.

In the qualifiers of the African Cup of Nations, the senior Lone Star went down 2-4 to Cape Verde on Saturday, March 26. Another disgrace for Liberian football was on Sunday, March 27 when the Under-23 sustained a humiliating defeat at the legs of the Under-23 of the Ivory Coast in Accra in the London 2012 Olympic qualifiers.

Liberia was walloped 0-4 by the Ivoirians. The country conceded a total of eight goals in two days in two international matches. Such horrific football image for Liberia could only be attributed to the inability of the current administration of the Liberia Football Association or LFA headed by Musa Bility.

Our football authority failed to plan and prepare because they had nothing to prepare, so they had nothing to implements as a nation on Saturday March 26 and Sunday, March 27, 2011 in Cape Verde and Ghana.

The road to London 2012 for Liberia has received numerous setbacks before the final one against Ivory Coast after full time.

Lone Star Under-23 first setback was experienced during a knock-out between Jubilee FC and Nimba FC, when Sam Johnson for Nimba FC got injured from a tackle with Jubilee FC defender.

The action put the Under-23 striker out of Lone Star junior team game played in Ghana against Ivory Coast on Sunday (March 27). Lone Star Under-23 second setback arrived when Israel base winger Patrick Doeplah died on Tuesday morning in Monrovia, after arriving in Liberia for a day training session with the team, before heading for Ghana. Lone Star Under-23 was contented for the arrival of America Under-20 Liberian forward Alex Nimo to replace the late Patrick Doeplah.

The team landed in Ghana on Thursday, they were informed that Nimo will not play for Liberia, until the right document are put into place. The team was left in the hands of Sekou Jabateh, he did his best, but they still lost.

The Liberia Football Association has confirmed the death scene of Patrick Doeplah, the Israeli based Liberian striker who met his untimely death on Tuesday morning.

The LFA in a statement issued Wednesday, March 23, 2011, said the player died at the home of his girlfriend on the old road, a suburb of Monrovia and not in a hotel room as was earlier stated.

Medical report quoting Dr. Brisbane said Patrick died Tuesday morning March 22, 2011 upon arrival at the JFK medical center in Monrovia, where he was taken by friends.

According to the LFA: «He had spent the night of March 21 at the home of his fiancée on the Old Road a few hours upon arrival into the country from Israel to form part of the national U-23 delegation to Ghana to engage against Ivory Coast on Sunday».

The Football House says the Government has launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to Patrick Doeplah’s death. The LFA says it is also sponsoring full autopsy on the mortal remains of the player to ascertain the foundation of his demise.

According to a statement signed by LFA spokesman Henry Flomo, the LFA wishes the family of the player to take solace in God Almighty during the period of bereavement. The Football House says the loss of Doeplah is colossal to the nation’s plan of improving the potential of youthful players.

Meanwhile, the LFA will open a book of condolence by 12:noon Thursday March 24, 2011 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia; it will be preceded by a major news conference.
