Take Every Inch – The World Cup 2014

Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, graduations, funerals all things that seem different, but at the same time they are all connected. They all bring people together.

Over the last few weeks there has been something going on that has done this, but more so in a MAJOR MAJOR way.

If you were any where near planet earth for the past few weeks you would in one way or another been acquainted with the greatest show on earth.

THE WORLD CUP.

As I write this I just finished watching the culmination of the greatest sporting event on earth. Something that unites the world like no other event. The FIFA World Cup finals between two very deserving teams Argentina vs. Germany.

What I love about what happened is that the these two teams both had motive, they both had opportunity, that both had history to make. Legacies were on the line.

Same chance, same opportunity but only one team would come out on top. Unfortunately that’s just the way life is. Each team could have won it, but it came down to who was willing to do more, have more be more.

The Germans definitely (in my humble opinion) didn’t want to go to a shootout with the Argentines. They are deadly there. So the Germans took advantage of every opportunity in the game that they had they took every inch. The Argentinian squad missed out on heaven sent opportunities three of them I can think of easily. From there best player to some of the others Higuain. I dare to say had they played like they had to climb through this game inch by inch there would have been more and they probably would have scored.

Germany had to do it the hard way and they didn’t shy away from it, the contact, the exhaustion, the aches and pains they endured. And that is to be expected in just about any football game. But there is someone who is going to want to take every inch they get leaving nothing left. Germany got off to a very slow start while Argentina was by far the better side during the first half. Unfortunately Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi missed two scoring opportunities. Higuain also had a goal dismissed and rightly so for being offside. Argentina was left to to wish they could go back in time and capitalize on their missed opportunities. As the match wore on Germany began dominating.

I wasn’t pulling for the germans but I respected them. I probably should because I have some ancestors from there, Messi just happens to be one of my favorite players. If you watched the game you would have noticed something from the germans that wasn’t as resonant with the Argentines and I’m no fan of the Germans team as I said already. But I love greatness. They stopped my guy from winning, but when you see greatness you’ve got to respect it.

The Germans have been hurting for this win for 24 years having not won since 2014 and having the wound reopened to the elements in 2002 losing in the finals to Brazil, losing in 2006 and 2010 in the semifinals. Out of that pain and hurt it pushed them to greatness.

I know they were tired, mentally fatigued, their bodies were aching and crying out for rest. The player I think embodied their spirit in the finals Bastian Schweinsteiger. Six times Schweinsteiger was leveled bruised and battered and six times he got up to play on. He knew the hurt or missing out on the opportunity to become a champion in 2010 and he along with his team would not miss it again.

They understood that when the clock stops at the end of the game it’s either a W or an L, there is no consolation prize. They would climb their way out of hell if they had to inch by inch, moment by moment, play by play, shot by shot. And that’s what I love about this team. They never gave up they never surrendered. The greats understand that there is a sense of urgency once the ball is on the pitch you get once chance to win this game, one chance to leave your mark, one opportunity to leave our legacy. They have the ability to go against all odds. They knew they were up against arguably the greatest player in the sport right now. They were playing a very good team and a well coached team. And they took it, inch by inch they took it making history in the process, being the first European team to win on South American soil.

Call to Action

Some of you are against some huge odds in your life. You are tired, you are putting in the work, you are putting in the hours. You’re tired of losing. You’re frustrated. I know you can’t bear to fail another test, you’re marriage is failing, the bank is about to foreclose your home. Your kids are driving you crazy. You don’t know how much more you can take.

I got news for you. You Can. You Will. You Must. Life is going to knock you down. It’s going to take you down, every chance it gets. Sometimes in life you just got to decide that you are going to make. You have to decide within yourself that you are going to make it. You are going to beat what ever sickness there is in your life. I want you to look at that sickness and realize the game isn’t over yet there’s still time left on the clock. You can still score and put the ball in the net. You’ve got one opportunity in life to leave what ever mark you are going to make, to leave your legacy. You get one life to give this world your gift and make it a better place. And the only way that you are going to be able to do that is if you take every inch you can get. The reason most people never succeed and the reasons you never succeed is because you gave up.

Now is not the time to give up. If you were going to give up you should have gave up last year, when you were in high school or college. You should have gave up before you spent your last dime. You should have gave up before you started your business. Somethings you’ve got to outlast. Your tough times won’t last forever if you take every inch the game isn’t over yet. Stay in the game. You’re going to get knocked down, but you got to get back up and tell life you don’t who it’s been dealing with, but it picked the wrong one today.

I’m telling you I’ve failed classes. I didn’t have the best GPA, but I told myself I’d make it and I never gave up. I never stopped pushing I never gave in and now I’m in medical school about to enter my third year. I’m living my dream. You’ve just got to push a little harder and press a little longer the game isn’t over yet. Like me and the Germans you can live your dream what ever it is. It might be to win the World Cup one day. I don’t know, but I know if you are reading this you are a survivor, I know you can make it, I know you can make your dreams reality.

Awaken your conscious mind (you’ll hear more about this in particular in the future). Peace & Love. Stop existing. Start Living.

Chelsea Set to Dominate European Football

There is a new heavyweight force in European football, they are being bankrolled seemingly by the Russian economy, they mean business, and their name is Chelsea F.C. Chelsea Football Club have always been a decent club in the second strata of English clubs. In London alone Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have invariably been ahead of the Chelsea Blues, even West Ham have often put Chelsea in the shade. But no longer, for in the season 2004-2005, Chelsea won the English Premier League title for the first time in fifty years, their only previous winning season.

But they haven’t stopped there, in the new season 2005-2006 they are already well clear in the title race leaving all their rivals gasping, and now they have set their sights on the pinnacle of all the club trophys, the European Champions League. Chelsea have never won the Champions League, indeed no London club ever has. And it is clear that their charismatic manager Jose Mourinho is intent on winning the Champions League again, he did so with his previous club Porto, of Portugal.

So what of the traditional English giants? Manchester United, often described as the world’s richest football club, have fallen into the hands of the Glazer family of Tampa Bay fame, but they reportedly needed to borrow half a billion pounds to buy United, a debt the club now shoulders. Spending on new players has so far been thin on the ground and United’s brusque Glaswegian manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has admitted that United, for so long England’s most successful club, cannot compete with Chelsea when it comes to buying players. The hordes of United fans are not amused, the natives are growing restless.

Arsenal, London’s biggest and most successful club, lost their skipper and driving force Patrick Vieira last summer, he moved to Juventus in Italy for £12 million pounds and with their star striker Thierry Henry suffering fitness problems, they picked up some uncharacteristic defeats at unfashionable clubs like West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough. This is their last season at their famous old Highbury Stadium before they move to their new purpose built Emirates stadium almost next door. The increased capacity of 60,000 will undoubtedly give their French manager Arsene Wenger more money to spend next year, but of course they have to pay for that new ground too. Far from challenging Chelsea again, it would seem that Arsenal are more likely to fall further behind.

That leaves Liverpool and Newcastle. News comes through just today that the American Kraft Company and family are interested in investing in Liverpool F.C., perhaps even buying the club outright just like Manchester United fifty miles up the road, but that is some way down the line. And they too are seeking to build a brand new stadium on Stanley Park and of course that all costs big money. Despite last year’s freakish win in the Champion’s League, Liverpool’s league form this season has again been patchy, and that included a 4-1 walloping by Chelsea on their own Anfield pitch. The idea that Liverpool might challenge Chelsea for the title remains a far-fetched one. Newcastle, England’s second best supported club are gradually improving, and they have signed England’s centre forward Michael Owen, but they still remain unconvincing at the top level. They haven’t won the title since Noah was seen building his ark, or so it seems, and they aren’t going to do so this season either.

So though it is very popular for foreign investors to snap up the leading English (and Scottish) football clubs, it appears that only Roman Abramovich at Chelsea has the financial muscle to buy the best players around. He is the only one to put unlimited funds on the table. Top class players now command a transfer fee of £40 million each and whereas Manchester United might afford one of them a season, Chelsea’s purse seems bottomless. They have already spent £220+ million and are still in the market to buy again when the transfer window re-opens in January.

They have already achieved success by winning at home, now the European Champion’s League is the Holy Grail for them, a trophy they are now the outright favourites to win with the odds layers. And astonishingly they have achieved their success to date with an array of strikers who haven’t really cut the mustard. Mutu the Romanian, was promptly sacked for drug taking, Crespo the Argentinian, was sent out to Milan on loan last season, and though he is back now he is hardly setting the world afire,or even playing that often, Gudjohnson an Icelander, plays more often than not, the muscular Drogba from the Ivory Coast, seems to have finally claimed the number nine shirt as his own, yet many blues followers still remain unconvinced about him, so it would seem likely that Chelsea may yet be looking for another proven goal scorer come January, especially after a recent rare defeat at Manchester United.

It would take a brave man to back against Chelsea in any competition at the moment. But if you’d like to, you can still have a free $30 dollar bet at Betfair.com by entering the code 6CHE3VPWJ when prompted. But one thing is for sure; no one would be surprised if this time next year the Premier League trophy AND the Champions League trophy were both on display in the Chelsea boardroom. It seems that only the Italian giants Milan and Juventus, and the Spanish top two, Real Madrid, and most especially Barcelona with their Brazilian superstar, surely soon to be the world player of the year, Ronaldinho, might stop the London blues. It really does seem as if we have entered a new era in European and world football, or if you prefer the ridiculous name that no one ever uses, Soccer. Chelsea fans have never had it so good while everyone else is left gasping in their wake, for it is a fact that Chelsea Football Club have raised the bar for everyone else to follow. Time will tell if anyone can.

FIFA World Cup – Is Wayne Rooney the World’s Best Player?

Joining The Debate

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup, there’s an ongoing debate about who the world’s greatest player is. Argentina’s Messi is among the most named. There are also those who root for the likes of Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo. Recently, Carlos Tevez, the Manchester City and Argentina striker, and Rooney’s former teammate at Man United, created a stir when he said that Rooney is the best he has ever played against, or alongside. In fact, Tevez categorically stated that Rooney is better than his Argentinian teammate, Messi, as well as the Portugal star striker, Christiano Ronaldo.

Early Bird

At 25, Rooney has over a hundred Premier League appearances and 50-plus England caps. When he turned out for Everton, against Arsenal, in his first Premier League appearance, Rooney established a record – since broken – as the youngest ever to play in the EPL. His goal scored in that match against the defending champions, Arsenal, ended Arsenal’s 30-match unbeaten streak. It also made Rooney the youngest ever player to score a goal in the EPL (this record has also been bested, since).

Rooney went on to become the youngest player to earn an England cap – another record, since erased – when he played in a friendly against Australia, in 2003. He became the youngest England player to score an international goal, at Euro 2004. Rooney announced his arrival in tournament action, with a sensational showing that ended, tragically, in the quarter-final against Portugal, when he got injured and was forced to leave the field.

Blazing a Trail

Rooney has spent eight years in football, and has eight trophies to highlight his presence in the football arena, including 3 Premier League titles, and one each in the UEFA Champions League, Community Shield, and Champions Cup. The icing on the cake was the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, in 2008.

He has no dearth of endorsements and has won countless individual prizes, capped by the 2010 PFA Players’ Player of the Year award conferred on him, in April, 2010.

Goal-scoring Ability

Statistics don’t often tell the whole truth, but they usually give broad indications of any existing trend. In Rooney’s case, the trend, if we can call it that, has been overwhelming. Over 145 goals, from about 360 appearances in club football, point to a prolific goal-scoring ability. Rooney’s strike rate has only improved in Internationals, where his 55 England caps (as on January, 2010) have resulted in 25 goals.

Comparison with Other Star Strikers

At the beginning of this article, I spoke of Messi and Christiano Ronaldo as being preferred over Rooney, by many, as the best player in the world. How does Rooney’s goal scoring compare with these strikers’? As of January 2010, Rooney had 25 goals from 55 Internationals. Messi has 13 goals from 41 matches; Christiano Ronaldo has 22 from 67. Going farther afield, Brazil’s Kaka has 26 from 73, and Spain’s Xavi (Player of the Tournament at Euro 2008) has 8 from 82 caps. Spain’s Fernando Torres, only a year older than Rooney, and who, like the England striker, has represented his country, since 2003, has 23 from 71.

Injury Threat

Injury was Rooney’s bane, at both the Euro 2004 and FIFA World Cup 2006 campaigns. Coincidentally, both campaigns ended at the quarter-final stage, and against the same team, Portugal, and by way of penalty kicks. While Rooney sustained an injury during the quarter-final of Euro 2004, at the FIFA World Cup 2006, he went into the tournament with an injury, and the England team management set up a special oxygen tent to help Rooney recover in time for action. Earlier, in March, this year, Rooney twisted his ankle during the EPL. He was back in action, a few weeks later, in the Champions League, where the injury recurred. All of England’s fans will be praying for Rooney’s fitness at this year’s FIFA World Cup.

Partnerships

One player, alone, cannot deliver victory. Where his rivals have scored over Rooney is in the quality of support they have derived from other players, in their respective squads. For instance, Xavi owed much of his success, at Euro 2008, to the support he got from teammates, Torres and Villa.

How effective Rooney is at FIFA World Cup 2010 will depend to a large extent on how well he is supported in the field by the likes of Gerrard, Crouch and Defoe.

Awesome Form

Rooney has been in awesome form, throughout the current season. His 34 goals from 44 appearances for Man U tell their own story. Gary Lineker, himself an accomplished former striker for England, avers that England cannot win without Rooney. Alan Shearer, another England ex-striker, recommends a 4-5-1 formation, with Rooney leading the attack, alone, a strategy that Lineker also endorses.

For England to shine at this World Cup, they must treat Rooney like the jewel he is – with extreme care. On Rooney’s part, he must keep his head, and not fall prey to on-field provocations from rivals, as he so infamously did, in the World Cup 2006 quarter-final, against Portugal.

Who is the World’s Best?

Chelsea’s boss, Ancellotti, will brook no argument. Rooney is the best, he says. This, coming from a man who has been at the receiving end of Rooney’s genius in the EPL, is a telling endorsement.

Top 10 Youngsters of World Football

The topic that everyone seems to want to question. Who are the best young players, player comparisons and most importantly is whether they will live up to their potential. There have been numerous youngsters in the past five years alone. Pablo Aimar and Javier Saviola were supposed to be the new Diego Maradona, Antonio Cassano the new Roberto Baggio. The list could go on for failed potential. Here I am going to list the top 10 players in the world.

10) Mario Balotelli

Current Club: Inter Milan

Nationality: Ghana, Italy

Age: 17

Position: Striker

Player Comparisons: George Weah

A player with big potential. A big, strong and pacy forward who is a specialist set piece taker. At just 17 he has been called up to an senior international call up by his home country Ghana, though this has been declined due to his preference to play for Italy once he reaches his 18th birthday. Baloteli is one to look out for the future.

9) Giovani Dos Santos

Current Club: Tottenham

Nationality: Mexico

Age: 19

Posistion: Attacking Midfielder (Left, Right)

Player Comparisons: Ronaldinho

Giovani Dos Santos comes to Tottenham with a huge reputation. At Barcelona he had the likes of Messi, Ronaldinho, Henry, Bojan and Iniesta competing with him for a first team spot. A skilful winger who can be just as strong playing on the right as he can on the left. The £4.7 million Tottenham paid Barcelona could prove to be a massive bargain as he plays his trade in the Premiership next season.

8) Karim Benzema

Current Club: Lyon

Nationality: France, Algeria

Age: 20

Position: Striker

Player Comparisons: Nickolas Anelka

The young French forward has just had a fantastic season in France finishing top scorers with 24 goals ensuring Lyon were to win the League for the 7th year in a row. His quality has interested the likes of Man Utd and Real Madrid though he has underlined his determination to stay with the French champions for the time being. His reputation around Europe has increased around Europe to the point that some fans were already predicting he would become the top scorer at Euro 2008, although this was not to happen.

7) Theo Walcott

Current Club: Arsenal

Nationality: England

Age: 19

Position: Right Midfielder, Striker

Player Comparisons: Ryan Giggs

It seems like the young England forward has been around for forever. It was when he was just 16 playing for Southampton that he convinced Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign him beating off some tough competition. He was then brought into the England squad for the 2006 World Cup without playing a single game for Arsenal, though he did not feature in the tournament. Since then he has slowly progressed and will this year be hoping to push himself into the Arsenal starting line up.

6) Carlos Vela

Current Club: Arsenal

Nationality: Mexico

Age: 19

Position: Striker

Player Comparisons: David Villa

Bought by Arsenal after receiving the player of the tournament in the u17s World Cup for Mexico. He has since spent his time on loan in Spain awaiting a work permit. A player who is very similar to Valencia start David Villa due to his pace and finishing ability. Like Tottenham signing Dos Santos he will be looking to make an impact in his opening season in English football.

5) Lulinha

Current Club: Cortinthians

Nationality: Brazil

Age: 18

Position: Attacking Mid

Player Comparisons: Kaka

The only player in the list playing outside of Europe will show how highly rated this player is. A hugely talented player who could be set to become one of the next Brazilian greats. Clubs like Chelsea are known to have made an enquiry though the Brazilian club will not let him go unless an offer of £24 Million comes in.

4) Alexandre Pato

Current Club: Ac Milan

Nationality: Brazil

Age: 18

Position: Striker

Player Comparisons: Samuel Eto’o

When people discuss the most deadly forward lines which they do with AC Milan, then for a 18 year old considered to be in that forward line is some fete. It was not until January where he could make his first team appearance for AC Milan. It was when people started realising why he was so talked about prior to his debut. Despite being injured and missing a few weeks off injury, Pato still managed to score 9 goals for the club. The club displayed so much confidence in him that they started him in the Champions league game against Arsenal ahead of the likes of Flippo Inzahgi. He is currently at the Beijing Olympics where he has already spoke off his desire to finish as top scorer.

3) Anderson

Current Club: Man Utd

Nationality: Brazil

Age: 20

Position: Central Midfield

Player Comparisons: Diego Simeone, Paul Scholes

Bought for a fee believed to be around £18 million. Utd have very high hopes for Anderson and will be one of the only youngsters in the world deemed worthy enough to fill in Paul Schole’s boots. A very all rounded midfielder who passed better then any player on this list. He can also tackle and dribble which is rare nowadays for a player of his talent. One issue with Anderson is that he has been quite prone to injuries so he will need to do his best to ensure this doesn’t damage his career.

2) Bojan

Current Club: Barcelona

Nationality: Spain

Age: 17

Position: Striker

Player Comparisons: Raul

800 youth goals for Barcelona should be enough to talk about for Bojan. Already given the number 11 shirt for Barcelona which might suggest he will be in the starting eleven for next season. He scored 12 goals in his 1st senior season for Barcelona. He seems like he wants to stay at the club for his whole career so he could break every goalscoring record the club has much like Bojan did at youth levels.

1) Sergio Aguero

Current Club: Athletico Madrid

Nationality: Argentina

Age: 20

Position: Striker

Player Comparisons: Romario

Seen along with Lionel Messi, the future of Argentinian football. Moving to Athletico Madrid was seen as a massive coup for the club due to the European teams being interested as well. He came to the club with a big reputation and it took him a year to settle in at Madrid where he could show glimpses of his true talent. It was in his second year where he unleashed his full talent terrorising defences everywhere in Spain becoming the La Liga player of the year. Joining Lionel Messi to become the youngest winner of the award in history. Bigger things are expected of him next season as the club are in the Champions League where he can have the perfect stage to demonstrate his talent to the world.

The question however remains as to how many of these players will live up to there potential. It is impossible to answer.

World Cup 2014 – The Contenders

Who will win the World Cup?

With just under a week to go before Brazil Take on Croatia in the first Game of the 2014 World Cup on home soil the pundits are beginning to refine their predictions of possible winners.

According to the bookies it looks like this: Brazil 3/1 Argentina 5/1 Germany 6/1 Spain 13/2.

The tournament has been held 19 times, but only won by 8 nations so considering former winners seems sensible.

Lets take a look at the top three and also a possible outside chance.

Brazil

No team has a better World Cup record than Brazil having played in all 19 tournaments winning it on five occasions. However they are only ranked 4th in the World by FIFA. On the down side people are pointing to the lack of competitive football for Felipe Scolari’s squad as they did not have to qualify being the hosts. Others fear that the weight of expectation on the team from home supporters may prove to much at a vital moment.

On the plus side in Neymar they have a world class striker supported by the classy Robinho and the speed of Dani Alves. Goal Keeper Julio Cesar brings confidence and organisation to the defence

Verdict: Brazil will go close as normal, but I think others have more complete teams.

Argentina

Manager Alejandro Sabella’s side are trying to win the tournament for the third time. They have competed in the finals fifteen times and are ranked 7th by FIFA. They were top scorers in the qualifying competition and only Columbia conceded less goals. Their strength lies in scoring goals and in Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria they have a range of options. Many say that Messi has found it difficult to reproduce his Barcelona form when playing for his country.

Verdict: When it gets to the big games having the ability to score goals in a knockout competition is always going to give a team an advantage. Messi has to get it right in this competition sooner or later. I have opted for Argentina

Germany

Germany have appeared in 17 tournaments winning 3 times and are ranked second in the World by FIFA. They were unbeaten in the qualifying competition winning 9 out of 10 games and scoring 36 goals, more than any other side.

On the plus side Germany have a good mixture of youth and maturity with defenders such as Philip Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger having over 100 caps each blended with the passing skills of Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil and the striking power of the 2010 World Cup Young Player of the Tournament Thomas Muller. Add a world class goal keeper in the form of Manuel Neuer and they seem to have an excellent chance.

On the down side even coach Joachim Low admits there is still work to do particularly in defence. Drawing with Sweden 4-4 on home soil when they were leading 4-0 suggests they may be prone to lapses in concentration. Also no European country has won when the competition has been held in South America.

Verdict: I think they have a really good chance but I think it will go to a South American Team.

Chile: An outside chance.

Chile have competed in 8 World Cup finals and are ranked 13th in the World by FIFA. Their qualifying competition got off to a flying start beating Bolivia and Venezuela away from home but three straight defeats saw Argentinian coach Claudio Borghi replaced by fellow countryman Jorge Sampoli. After losing his first game in charge he won the next 5 and drew the remaining game. Their attacking style of play is reflected in the facts that only Argentina scored more goals in qualifying. However Chile also conceded more goals than any other team and only drew one game.

There are some familiar players from European football With Alexi Sanchez from Barcelona, Eduardo Vargas from Valencia and Arturo Vidal from Juventus. Wigan fans may recognise midfielder Jean Beausejour.

Verdict: They may not win but they will be exciting to watch.

Hang on What about Spain?

They have appeared in 13 of the tournaments are the current holders as well as being European Champions and are top ranked by FIFA.

My reason for opposing them is their low goal count. They only scored 14 in qualifying the 25th lowest total. Yes they can keep possession but in a knock out competition played in South America I think they will have to tell Del Bosque he will have to hand back the trophy.

World Cup Upsets

Brazil 1950 Brazil 1 – Uruguay 2

This was the final of the 1950 tournament with Brazil on home ground. Under the rules of the time points totals were used to determine the result not just the winner of a game and Brazil just needed to draw to win the trophy. 200,000 people crowded into the Estadio do Maracana. Brazil took the lead early in the second half, but Uruguay equalized and then with 20 minutes to go Alcides Ghiggia scored the winner silencing the packed stadium.

W. Germany 1974 W Germany 0 – East Germany 1

This game was played in Hamburg at the height of the cold war. It was the last group match and both teams knew they would progress to the next round. Only 1500 East Germans had been allowed to travel to the game out of a total crowd of 60,000.The first half was very tight with neither team having many chances but in the second half Juegen Sparwasser found space between defenders to chip the ball over the head of keeper Sepp Maier. E Germany finished in top spot and went on to face Brazil and The Netherlands. West Germany had much easier opponents and went on the win the tournament beating the Netherlands in the final.

Spain 1982 Spain 0 -Northern Ireland 1

No one gave Northern Ireland a chance when they met Spain on home soil. However early in the second half Gerry Armstrong shocked the crowd with the only goal of the game. Northern Ireland had to play the final 30 minutes with 10 men when Mal Donaghy was sent off. Northern Ireland managed to reach the quarter finals.

Italy 1990 Cameroon 1 – Argentina 0

This was the opening game of the 1990 tournament played at the San Siro. Argentina were defending champions. The first half was relatively uneventful but on 61 minutes Cameroon went down to 10 men after Andre Kama Biyek was sent off for a foul on Claudio Caniggia. But just 5 minutes later Cameroon scored the winner when Francois Omam Biyek headed into the net. Nery Pumpido the Argentinian keeper fumbled the save. Cameroon then went down to 9 players following another red card but hung on for a memorable victory.

France 1998 Croatia 3 – Germany 0

Croatia had only become an independent nation in 1990 and this was their first time at the finals. Germany had beaten them 2-1 in the 1996 Euro semi finals. Germany had been in control of the game up to the 40th minute but then defender Christian Woerns was sent off for a late tackle on Davor Sukor. Croatia scored 8 minutes later through Robert Jarni. Germany fought hard for 35 minutes of the second half but 2 goals in 5 minutes firstly by Goran Vlaovic in 80 minutes and then Davor Sukor on 85 minutes saw Croatia through to the last 4. It was the heaviest German World Cup defeat since they lost 8-3 to Hungary in 1954.

USA 1994 Bulgaria 2 – Germany 1

Bulgaria had qualified for the tournament by beating France 2-1 in Paris coming back from 1-0 down. This was a quarter final and Germany were strong favourites playing as a unified country for the first time. Lothar Matthaus scored from a penalty in the 48th minute. However in the 75th minute Hristo Stoitchkov was brought down. Taking the free kick himself he levelled the score. Just 3 minutes later Yordon Letchkov scored to give Bulgaria the win. It was a game strewn with yellow cards, Germany receiving 5 and Bulgaria 3.

South Korea and Japan 2002 Senegal 1 – France 0

France were the reigning champions and this was opening match of the group stage. It was Pape Bouba Diop who scored for Senegal after 30 minutes. France or the French coach Roger Lemarre could offer no response and France were the first defending champions to go out in the group stage. France finished bottom of the group, their worst ever performance and Senegal progressed to the next round.

South Korea and Japan 2002 Italy 1 S Korea 2 (AET)

Coached by Dutchman Gus Hiddink South Korea adopted a 3-4-3 formation and pressed Italian defenders relentlessly. They were awarded a penalty after just 4 minutes but it was saved by Buffon. Italy took the lead through a Vieri header midway through the first half. They also had another goal disallowed which on further viewing seems to have been OK. In the second half South Korea kept finding space and in the 88th minute equalized through Seol Ki Hyeon. It went to extra time where the first or "Golden Goal" would decide the tie. It looked like heading to penalties when Ahn Jung Hwan scored in the 117th minute. He played club football for Perugia and Serie A whose owner sacked him for his efforts.

Football Players – Born in One Country and Playing For Another

If in some cases these players have an emotional connection to the country for which they became naturalized, in other cases that no longer happens.

At a time when it is quite normal for football clubs to field foreign football players, clubs like Athletic Bilbao from Spain and Hrvatski Dragovoljac in Croatia, go against the grain in their insistence on fielding only local players.

However, when it comes to most national teams, the acceptance of foreign players is viewed differently, when they include players that can only be described as nationals in a very loose sense.

Yet this is not a recent trend and in fact the practice had been going on prior to World War II as is the case of the German team that absorbed the best Austrian players and even forced Ernst Wilimowski of Poland into its squad during the occupation of Poland.

Before the 1934 World Cup, Italy naturalized a number of fantastic South Americans of Italian descent, like Demaria, Orsi, Monti, and Guaita who helped the «azzurri» win the World Cup against Czechoslovakia.

Ferenc Puskas became a Spanish citizen after the bloody Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956. Spain also gave passports to another Hungarian Ladislav Kubala, as well as the Argentinian national Alfredo Di Stefano who was of Italian descent. More recently, Donato Silva of Brazil represented the Spaniards.

Picking naturalized players for national teams knows no borders.

The World Cup 2010 in South Africa will have many players that were born in one country but chose to represent another. In many cases they came from former colonies, a situation quite common in the French team that won their only world title with the precious help of players born in former French territories.

Would «Les Bleus» have been so successful without great African players like Zinedine Zidane (Algeria), Patrick Vieira (Senegal) or Marcel Desailly (Ghana), Caribbean Islands reinforcements like Lilian Thuram and Thierry Henry (Guadalupe) or Christian Karembeu (New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean) as well as Robert Pires (Portugal) David Trezeguet (Argentina), Youri Djorkaeff and Alain Boghossian, both from Armenia? It looked more like a World XI team that brought the World Cup and European Championships trophy home, to France. Michele Platini one of the best French players of all time was Italian.

Germany soon filled the absence of Klinsmann, Bierhoff and Kirsten when they retired. Players like Rink and Cacao (Brazil), Bobic (Slovenia), Dundee (South Africa), Neuville (Switzerland), Asamoah (Ghana), Mehmet Scholl (Turkey) Kurany (Brazil) as well as Littbarski, Klose and Podolski (from Poland). Poland’s national team has also adopted Emanuel Olisadebe of Nigeria.

Holland started using many fantastic players like Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Ruud Gullit, Patrick Kluivert, Frank Rijkaard, Pierre van Hooijdonk and Aaron Winter just to name some of the best, all from Surinam, a former Dutch colony in South America. Philip Cocu was French but played for the Orange team.

Despite being a recurrent process, FIFA has been battling to reverse the growing trend of naturalized players. Some measures however, have been taken to change things in the right direction.

FIFA has increased from two to five years the time required in which the player must live in a country, before beginning the process of naturalization. There is also the requirement that the player had never represented his nation of origin, including at youth level.

Does Argentina Have Enough Fuel to Win FIFA World Cup 2010?

Argentina have some of football’s biggest names doing duty at this year’s World Cup. Enough to cause sleepless nights to players and coaches of every team likely to play against them, in South Africa.

But the last year has been anything but smooth. For many Argentinians, Maradona is God. They even have a Church of Maradona, with over 100,000 registered followers. Once you accept the premise that God can do no wrong, the results can be mixed, to understate things a bit.

One result was 88 players turning out in the space of a year. The fall out was absence of rhythm and an abject showing in the qualifiers, where a match against Peru went into injury time, and Argentina was only just bailed out by Palermo. The scene was repeated against Uruguay, the rescuer on the occasion Bolatti, and not a moment too soon, with just six minutes of regulation time to go.

Another was a public falling out of Maradona and Rikelme, with the coach airing his grievance against the star player, on national television. Argentina will surely miss Riquelme.

Maradona’s love-hate relationship with journalists shows no sign of abating, especially after his team selection, which is perceived as being top heavy, with its accent on attack, at the expense of midfield comfort.

Take a look at the in-form forward line. Between them, Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Diego Milito, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, and Martin Palermo have scored 163 times in 250 club appearances, this year.

Even the Spanish Armada of David Villa, Fernando Llorente, Pedro Rodriguez and Fernando Torres pales before this sextet.

But this philosophy of attack at any cost has an expensive prize tag – a ragged midfield. Only 7 midfielders, Juan Sebastian Veron, Javier Mascherano, Jonas Gutierrez, Angel Di Maria, Maximiliano Rodriguez, Javier Pastore, and Mario Bolatti, could find a place. The lopsided selection could make the team vulnerable in the event of injuries, owing to the absence of midfielder back-ups.

The team will surely keep the scoreboard busy in their group B matches against Nigeria, South Korea and Greece.

This is especially so as there is no other team in the group that is likely to test the Argentine defence, but the story could alter greatly, in the round of 16 and beyond.

Argentinian fans must pray (preferably, in the Church of Maradona) that Plan A succeeds. Because there’s no Plan B.

Whosoever Knoweth the Power of the Dance, Dwelleth in God

Sacred Dance has nothing to do with a specific dance style or with particular body techniques. The dancer moves in a way that unities his or her Mind, Body and Spirit with a Higher Spiritual Energy. It is not of importance whether we call this energy «God», «The Creator», «The Great Spirit», «Nature», «The Cosmos» or anything else. What is important is that this results in the dancer feeling spiritually uplifted and filled with joy.

Dance is clearly one of the earliest forms of worship. Cave art from early prehistoric times onwards bears witness to the power of the dance. Such paintings and engravings occur worldwide. In the western part of Arnhem Land in Australia a cave painting shows two men playing instruments to accompany the dance. A rock shelter at Cogul near Lenda in Catolonia, Spain portrays a group of nine women. They are wearing knee length skirts and are dancing round a small naked male figure. The State of Madhya Pradash in India has abundant rock art depicting dancers and musicians. The caves in Tassili Algeria have paintings of female dancers and the Etruscans in 500 BC depicted dancing in wall frescoes.

Certain dances mimic animals or are aimed to ensure that something happens. For example hunters in ancient times are shown in cave paintings dancing wearing animal skins and masks. We can safely assume that this was to ensure good hunting. Dances miming the gathering of the harvest must also be of ancient origin. As time has passed such dances have become folk dance rather than sacred dance.

Sacred Dance is often preceded by elaborate secret preparations such as bathing, avoidance of certain foods and drinks and from sexual intercourse. There may be periods of intense prayer and the taking of trance inducing substances.

One of the best documented European sacred dances is that connected to the cult of the Greek god Dionysus. The rituals in his honor included orgies, the sacrifice of animals, excessive wine-drinking and trance dancing which continued until the dancers collapsed with exhaustion.

Judaism had no problem with dance being connected to worship. Psalm 150 for example:- «Praise ye the Lord… Praise him with the timbrel and dance». King David is said to have whirled before the Ark of the Covenant. In the Talmud dancing is described as being the principal function of angels.

Dance was part of the service in the early Christian church. It took place in the choir and was led by the bishop. Today there are Christian churches who are reintroducing dance sometimes in a very self-conscious style.

Sacred Dance can in itself be therapeutic.

The Shakers, who were an offshoot of the Quakers were brought to America from England in 1774 by Ann Lee. A vision had told her that sexual intercourse was the source of mankinds’s troubles. She established a closed community which practised self-sufficiency and communal ownership of all possessions. The Shakers had a deep understanding of the aesthetic of simplicity which showed itself in all aspects of their lives.

Shaker dances were held in the evening. Men and women entered the hall separately. They marched in on tip-toe and formed two rows facing each other about five feet apart.Men were on the right with the women on the left. The Chief Elder stood in the middle and gave a five minute address. He concluded by saying «Go forth, old men, young men and maidens and worship God with all your might in the dance». Men and women did not intermingle. There were pauses to see if anyone had received «a gift». Then two of the sisters would start whirling like tops with their eyes shut. They continued whirling for about 15 minutes when they stopped suddenly and sat down again.

There are no longer any viable Shaker communities and the dances have therefore died out. A certain number of their hymns, however, continue to be sung in various other churches.

An ancient Sacred Dance tradition continues to this day in Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. The Sufis (who represent the mystical side of Islam) have whirling dances. In Turkey the tradition traces back to Celaleddin Mevlana Rumi who died in 1273. His son organized his followers into the brotherhood of whirling dervishes now known as the Mevlevi.

When Ataturk gained political power in the early years of the twentieth century he abolished the dervish orders and turned the monasteries into museums. They were revived in 1957.

The significance of the dervish dance is connected to the sun, the moon and the revolving stars. The worshippers wear clothing which has symbolic meaning. The tall conical felt hats signify the tombstones and therefore the death of the dancers egos. The white robes represent the shrouds around their egos. The flowing black cloaks symbolize the dancers being trapped in worldly tombs. At the beginning of the ceremony the cloaks are removed to symbolize the worshippers deliverance from the cares and attachments of this world.

The dance is accompanied by a reed flute. After a series of rituals the worshippers reach a point where they are all simultaneously whirling with their right hands held palm up to receive the blessings of heaven. They hold their left hands palm down to transfer the blessings to earth.

Although non-participants are allowed to view the ceremony the dances remain true Sacred Dances for those taking part and for many of those watching. Dervish music should never be used for secular purposes, especially not to accompany oriental dance. The chants are prayers and should be respected as such.

Today Africa remains rich in the area of traditional Sacred Dance. The Yoruba of Western Nigeria have many traditions of deities dancing. Some are said to be able to dance on one leg. Sango (who is associated with thunder) consulted Orunmila (who is associated with divination and wisdom) as to how he could acquire permanent wealth. Orunmila’s advice was for Sango to acquire a splendid outfit onto which he should sew as many cuaris as he possibly could. Cauris were once used as currency and are thus a sign of wealth. People seeing Sango so splendidly dressed would assume that he was wealthy. Orunmila told Sango that he should dance around wearing this outfit. The outcome was that through dancing and asking for alms Sango became very rich. Sango priests carry axes when in company or on parade. Sango priests wear feminine hairstyles, beads around the neck and earrings on festive occasions. The dances for Sango are very fast and athletic. All the deities have their associated dances. To be unable to dance is to be unable to worship properly.

In Ghana I have seen young men dancing in trance and slashing at themselves with razor sharp cutlasses. The ferocious slashing never broke the skin or even left a mark. I have also witnessed Sacred Dances to the deities of the Thunder Pantheon. Here older female cult members wandered among the crowds making suggestive gestures with a wooden phallus. The performance was supposed to be amusing and it was. There were also conjurers on hand changing sand to powdered white chalk. Anyone could come and watch the dances if they showed the proper respect to the deity. This meant that both men and women had to be bareheaded. The men had to tie their cloths around the waist so that they were bare-chested and women had to tie their cloths under the armpits.

West African Sacred Dances tend to be danced outdoors often at night. The dancers come onto the circular dance area and leave it as they see fit. They may all be dancing the same steps but each dancer expresses them in his or her own way. Everyone dances as a group but has their own «space» within it. The dancer and the choreographer are one and the same person.

Africa stands in grave danger of losing its Sacred Dances due to the dwindling number of people adhering to the traditional religions. Only cult members may dance the Sacred Dances. Members of Christian churches and Followers of Islam have always not unsurprisingly been expressly forbidden to take part in any Sacred Dances and the number of converts is increasing. Some Christian churches allow a certain amount of drumming and dancing during services. Both the drumming and dancing have little «life force» or visual and aural interest. Musicians are beginning to create new genuinely african Sacred Songs for the church. If anyone knows of choreographers working to create authentic african contemporary Sacred Dance I would love to hear about it.

The cults need younger members. If they fail to materialize then the Sacred Dances will not evolve within their true context. The dances will either die out or become shadows of themselves as social dances danced by all and sundry simply for pleasure.

I have written very little indeed about the music which is of equal importance to the dance. The music is a subject in itself. If you are interested in African Rhythms I suggest that you try and get hold of «An Approach to African Rhythm» by Dr Seth Cudjoe published by the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, Legon.

The Sacred Dances of Bali, Indonesia are a beautiful prayer made manifest. Wali are Sacred Dances indispensably connected with rituals of the same name. They take place on the first day of a ritual, in the inner courtyard of the temple.

Sanghyang Dedari and Sanghyang Jaran are both Sacred Dances. I witnessed Sanghyang Dedari in which two little girls danced in a trance mirroring each others movements. Their eyes were wide open but they were said to see nothing. At the conclusion of the dance they were brought out of trance by a white-clad priest who sprinkled holy water on them.

Sanghyang Jaran is a very spectacular dance in which A young man wears a belt attached to which is a horse’s head woven from coconut fronds. This young man was put into trance by a priest. He then ran prancing like a horse into a fire of coconut husks. After which he stood still for a while before jumping around Next he moved out of the fire and the burning husks were raked together before once again the young man danced into the fire. The third time he did this he actually sat in the embers and rolled around. At some crucial point, not identifiable to those watching, the young dancer was pulled clear and helped out of his trance.

The Balinese are devout Hindus and the Sacred Dance tradition is treasured, appreciated and is still very much a part of every ones lives.

Let us hope, that in the parts of the world where there is still genuine Sacred Dance it will not degenerate into a spectacle where we are aiming to influence an audience rather than the Spiritual World.

How To Touch A Girl And Have Her Melt In Your Arms

Learning how to touch a girl will allow you to gauge her level of comfort with you every step of the way of how you relate with her from a date, to holding her hands, to kissing, to foreplay, and to lovemaking.

When you understand how to touch a woman she will be melting into your touch, smiling, or rolling her eyes back, and then you can lead her further in exploring her sensual and sexual opening.

If she is tensing up, crossing her arms, or moving away, then you know that she is not yet ready for that level of touch intimacy.

If you are not with a girl right now, get a piece of fabric and practice touching it in the ways that I will go over.

If you are dating or in a relationship, put these distinctions into practice this week!

Think of it as practicing your kicks in martial arts, foul shots in basketball, serves in tennis, and driving in golf. In beginning to learn how to touch a girl, you will have to dedicate yourself to the art of touch.

If you are uncomfortable with touch in general, start to get comfortable and touch everyone and everything around you. When I say touch, I don’t mean grope, I don’t mean just walking up and directly and grabbing someone. While learning how to touch a woman, everything needs to be smooth and progressive rather than rough and abrupt. This means your initial touch might be a light brush that lasts half a second.

I will start you off with some mindsets you need to have as you begin to get comfortable with touching girls.

How to touch a girl tip #1: Stroke her as you would a cat

When you touch or stroke your woman, approach slowly, gently, softly, and with no sudden movements. Be intentional and sensitive in your touch. Feel into what parts of her is relaxing into you and whether to use broad or short strokes.

Notice the speed of your touch, the rhythm of your touch, and how to use your body as part of the touch. If you are not sensitive in your touch, a cat will run away or even scratch you. Same thing with a woman, so practice your ability to touch women with delicate artistry

How to touch a girl tip #2: Touch her as if you have all the time in the world

Most guys mess up with girls and make them feel creeped out because they’re in a hurry. The girl can tell that the guy is after something – sex. Even if the touch is brief, the sense of timelessness can linger with her if you touch her with presence.

If you can use your touch to lead her out of her mind, the busy day, and the stress and tension of life into a realm of timeless pleasure, then you will become a haven for her. The way you touch her will convey to her what kind of a lover you are in bed so make it feel like an eternity.

Girls will be wishing they could be with you and stay with you long after you’re gone if you can create these kinds of feelings and moments.

How to touch a girl tip #3: Touch her as much as you can

Girls love being touched. They crave it actually. Of course, they don’t want to be touched by just any man, or in any way. A woman has to be feeling some kind of existing connection to you before she’s ready to be touched sensually and often by you. Create that readiness in her through your words and attitude first.

Playfulness and humor are always a great place to come from to get a woman to open up to you on a more sensual level. When a girl says something funny, touch her as a way to connect. You’ll notice that when you say something funny, women will often touch you as they laugh. When she does something incredible, or shows a part of her personality that you really enjoy, touch her as a sign of your approval.

When she is tense, but her body language is open, give her a massage. When she feels a bit stressed, pull her toward you and hold her.

If you are having dinner, sit next to her and stroke her hair to add to the pleasure and sensations from the food. You get the idea.

How to touch a girl tip #4: Romance her with your touch

Almost half of all books sold in the US are romance novels. This shows you how much women want romance.

Give her what she wants! Touch her as if you are an amazing lover waiting to sweep her off her feet. Hold her and create a protective bubble where the rest of the world does not exist for a moment. Enchant her with the way you draw her out with your touch. Express your passion for her through your touch.

How to touch a girl tip #5: Touch her as if she means the world to you

This mindset might feel like a stretch in the beginning, but with time, it will become more and more natural to who you are, and you will naturally give more of yourself when relating with women.

How would you touch her if you chose her 100%?

If this is the woman you cherished beyond almost anything in your life, your car, your house, your money, anything you possess, how would you touch her?

How would you touch a girl who you would risk your life to protect?

Feel into all of these questions and transfer the feeling into your touch.

If you are already practicing a bulk of these distinctions in touch, then congratulations, you are way ahead of the game. If you haven’t been, or if you didn’t even know that you can have these mindsets and practices, then today is the day to start!

There is no time like the present. Practice petting a dog, a cat, or a piece of fabric if your girl isn’t around. If you are dating or are in a relationship, put these principles into practice immediately. You will accelerate your knowledge in how to touch a woman through practice, so just do it! You are just getting a peek into what’s available to you in your possibilities as a man. Get into action and put these principles into practice and make some women happy!
