Uneasiness Among The Top Four In The English Premier League

Just this weekend, the top 4 spots of the English Premier League table experienced a reshuffle. The reason for the reshuffle is not far-fetched. It was as a result of a game, the match between Chelsea and Manchester City. The full time score of the match goes thus, Chelsea 2, Manchester City 0.

With this result, Chelsea is now 3rd on the table and Manchester City 4th. So one can see the uneasiness in the top 4 spots of the EPL. Prior to this Manchester City was leading Chelsea. Man City was occupying the 3rd position while Chelsea FC was occupying the 4th position. They were leading Chelsea with 2 points. But after Sunday’s game the table was turned and thus we have the current situation mentioned earlier.

The question is this, what is the implication of this to the top 4 contenders currently occupying the top 4 positions in the league? The answer is simple; the title race is not over yet. No space should be considered secure at least for now. Even the team occupying the number 1 position, Manchester United cannot afford to say that the title is now within their grasp and that no other team can move them out of that number 1 position. They still have a lot of work to do to remain at that most coveted position. Complacency on the part of Man U at this time will cost them this cherished position.

But this disturbance at these cherished places on the table is caused by only 1 club at the moment. The club causing it is Chelsea FC. The impact of this disturbance was increased on Sunday when Chelsea won their home game against Manchester City 2-0. Of course, this was not a good news to Man U fans. This is because their current most dreaded rival is Chelsea. So they know the uphill task they have ahead. Their darling team must overcome this rival if they must be sure of winning the title. Again, those of them that are current with the league know that this their rival still has a game in hand. If they win this game, the 9 point gap between their darling team and their foe will be reduced to 6 which make the matter worse. Here again we see the uneasiness among the top flight.

Actually, the top four positions were never in a peaceful condition this season. They have always been experiencing a change in occupants. Therefore, the winner of this season’s English Premier League will be one that will overcome this restiveness with the weapon of consistency.

Condoleezza Rice: Did She Deserve Jon Stewart’s Vulgarity

Condoleezza Rice: Did she deserve Jon Stewart’s vulgarity?

Jon Stewart, not to be confused with John Stewart or John Stuart, is the host and star of the Daily Show, a fake news show that spoofs society and governments and important people. As with most talk show and news shows, President Bush is key fodder for the fire of satirical comedy.

You can read about Jon Stewart at: http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Jon_Stewart

Stewart is an intelligent man sired by two well educated and intelligent people. He has a bright wife and I’m sure that their two children are smart little wimps. He was raised in a community full of intelligent people. (I know that Jon’s wife, once a veterinary technician, is bright because he would never marry a dullard.)

Somehow Jon Stewart, born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz on November 28 1962, developed a base and pooped mouth. Maybe he got it on the soccer field when he attended Williams and Mary. He is also capable of obscenity, often a focus of his show. I guess these features, obscenity and profanity, and, if I could invent a new word for infantile language poopmouthity, appeal to the mind set of many of those who watch the show.

I often watch the show. When it gets too filthy, I switch the channel and I’m sure that many other folks do too. There are limits.

But poopmouthity and obscenity are one thing. Downright degradation of character is another. I’ve finally got to my subject, the obscenity and vulgar presentation of Jon Stewart toward Condoleezza Rice.

Condoleezza Rice is an intelligent and well-educated woman with talent and experience that made her President Bush’s choice for Secretary of State. She is a hard-working and diligent person and not a sex object for Jon Stewart to debase. She does not need Jon Stewart’s service because she is childless.

You can read about the secretary at: http://www.state.gov/secretary/

Jon Stewart has gone too far. He needs to apologize to Condoleezza Rice. He also needs to follow the rules of decency in his public presentations.

Did Bob Hope show such behavior on television: How abut Red Skelton or Jack Benny? These comic geniuses where able to insinuate without gross insultation .

Now that word is in the dictionary!

The gap between these greats and Jon Stewart will have to be narrowed if Jon Stewart expects to achieve their status. As big as Benny Hill? Not a chance!

The End

The Ghanaian Way

As a 25 year old Ghanaian, it still amazes me what happens around me everyday in this country. Yes, I was born and bred here; ii have not even seen the airport before, let alone gone out off this country so you can call me a veteran.

In Ghana, the basic transportation is «trotro» (minivan). Face it, it is cheaper than taxi and we don’t have trains like in India. The average Ghanaian can not afford hiring taxis because even our economy is not stable. Do not get me wrong, I love my country, but it is frustrating when one US dollar costs two Ghana cedis, the minimum job anyone can do here is selling and politicians want to be treated like gods when they do not do anything for the country when they are in power.

On the plus side, Ghanaians are very hospitable people, something foreigners tend to take advantage of, especially the Chinese. We love peace and unity, and we love football (soccer). Our love for this sport is legendary. With known names like Micheal Essien, Kevin prince Boateng, Abedi Ayew Pele and His son Dede Ayew, etc. I think some foreign countries did not know this country until the world cup.

In Ghana, we love our culture, a prime example will be the asantes in the Ashanti region. Otumfour osei Tutu II is the ASANTEHENE (chief of asantes) in my opinion is more revered than the prince of wales (no offense to the British). One has to see him, especially when it is time for their festival. He is adorned in gold from head to toe with our native cloth, «kente». The gold on him tends to weigh so much that his hands has to be held by his servants.

One thing though is that, Ghanaians tend to be copycats. With the help of tv and the world wide web, Ghanaian youth are becoming more westernized by the day. Our music genre highlife evolved to hiplife, with the help of the ‘godfather» Reggie Rockstone. Now the Ghanaian music industry is full of hip-hop, dance-hall and even niger music (beats from Nigeria). I do love these genres of music, in my opinion it is not good and proper to raise high the flag of other countries when it has become so easy for us nowadays to raise our flag.

This article is just an introductory one. ‘The Ghanaian way’ is going to be series of articles about Ghanaians and our society. the positive and the negative and the silliness.Opinions are like noses, everyone has one. this is mine. Till next time.

"Hands-Up-To-The-Sky" – Ricardo Kaka Biography

Kaka Biography – Introduction

I’m writing this Kaka biography a few weeks after the 2006/2007 Champions League final, a final ending with a happy result, 2-1 for the Brazilian’s team, AC Milan against England’s Liverpool.

I must say, as impressive as Filippo Inzaghi (who scored both AC Milan’s goals) was, my eyes were focused on the Brazilian Kaka throughout the entire match. His passes, his dribblings, his speed and his vision on the pitch were honey to my eyes.

I decided to write this Kaka biography not because the Brazilian needs it, but because I want you to find out who the real Ricardo Kaka is, how he rose up the ladders of his career before being a super star and what exactly does that «hands-up-to-the-sky» kaka celebration mean.

Kaka Biography – Early Career

After spending his early days at different youth clubs around his home town of Brasilia and Sao Paulo, Kaka was eventually offered a professional contract at a very tender age: seventeen.

Since Kaka played great soccer for Sao Paulo’s youth teams, the reserve team and the Brazilian U-17 national squad, he immediately attracted the eyes of several European clubs, the one coming forward first being Turkish side Gaziantepspor.

Sao Paulo agreed to sell Kaka, for a sum of $1.5m, a sum that, if you think of the player’s market value now, would seem like peanuts. Still, the sum was quite big for the Turkish side, especially for a 17-year old footballer, Kaka’s young age giving them no guarantees that he will turn out to play great soccer regularly on professional level.

Kaka Biography – Swimming Pool Incident Sao Paulo FC

In his first season as a professional player for Sao Paulo, Kaka didn’t play for the Brazilian team, but he used this time to accommodate himself with his new colleagues and the hardships of professional soccer in Brazil.

He was probably going to get his debut that season still, but an unfortunate swimming pool incident almost ended his career as a footballer, Kaka fracturing his spine in September 2000. Not only did he risk his future, but this fracture almost cost him his life and he was in real danger of being paralyzed for the rest of his life.

Miraculously, Kaka made a full recovery and came back to training after his full strength came back to him. From that day forward, Kaka found faith in God and some of his profits as a professional footballer always go to the Church, as a small gesture of thanking God for saving his life and his career. The famous Kaka celebration, after he scores a goal, is related to that incident, as each time, he thanks God for allowing him to play soccer and be there on the pitch.

Kaka Biography – Attracting the European Giants

After fully recovering from his horrible fracture, Kaka was finally given a chance to play for Sao Paulo, in January 2001 and he didn’t disappoint, scoring no less than 12 goals in 27 appearances that season. This guaranteed him a solid first team place for the 2001-2002 season, in which he scored another 10 goals in 22 matches and whenever a young Brazilian soccer player performs that well, he’s bound to get a few calls from some major European clubs.

One of these clubs would be AC Milan, one of Italy’s most important teams and Kaka signed without blinking, eager to start a European career.

You probably know the story from here. Kaka is currently in his fourth season with Milan, whom he won the Serie A championship with once, the Italian Super Cup once, and the UEFA Champions League a few weeks ago (he also played another Champions League final in the 2004-2005 season, but lost it to Liverpool in what is considered one of the most beautiful finals of the tournament). He became an indispensable player for AC Milan but also for Brazil.

As a Brazil soccer player, Kaka scored 31 goals in 52 matches so far and gave out numerous perfect assists in his role as an attacking midfielder. Having the young midfielder in the squad, Brazil football became even more technical and quick (if that was even possible) and they’re considered amongst the main favorites for the following international tournaments.

Premier League Match Time: Everton Vs Liverpool

One of the mouth watering prospects in store for football fans, when the Premier League returns after an International break, is a Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool.

Goodison Park will be the venue of a lunch-time kick off on Sunday in what promises to be an explosive match between two sides looking to prove themselves, after indifferent starts to their Premiership campaigns.

Coincidentally, both teams languishing near the bottom of the table, have six points each after seven matches. With new ownership looming for the Reds, Roy Hodgson will be keen to underline his managerial skills with a win. Especially after fans chanted for his removal in the Reds’ 2-1 home loss to Blackpool.

In some bad news for Liverpool (other than the off-field wrangles at Anfield), Dirk Kuyt is sidelined ahead of Sunday’s game, owing to an injury sustained by the striker in Holland’s Euro qualifier with Sweden on Tuesday, a match that the Dutch won convincingly. It could be a month before Kuyt returns to action.

But Hodgson will take cheer from Torres’ return to the team after the Spanish striker showed signs of recovery from an abductor strain.

Steven Gerrard, as ever, will the key man, and Hodgson will look for an inspired performance from the England midfielder in what is a must-win for the Anfield squad.

Everton on their part have injury worries too, with the sidelining of Victor Anichebe, Steven Pienaar, Louis Saha and Jack Rodwell. Manager David Moyes will hope that home advantage inspires the Blues to bank three points from the game, and move up the points table.

The Toffees will look to Tim Cahill to provide the momentum, even as the Reds are set to miss the services of Daniel Agger, Fabio Aurelio and Paul Konchesky due to injury.

The following players were in Everton starting eleven in their 2-0 win against Birmingham, on October 2: Tim Howard, Phil Neville, Sylvain Distin, Philip Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, Marouane Fellaini, Mikel Arteta, Leon Osman, Tim Cahill, Yakubu.

The substitutes for the match were: Barkley, Jermaine Bedford, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, John Heitinga, Magaye Gueye, Tony Hibbert, Jan Mucha.

Liverpool included the following players in their last league match against Blackpool, a match that the Reds lost 2-1: Jose Manuel (Pepe) Reina, Glen Johnson, Sotiros Kyrgiakos, Martin Skrtel, Jamie Carragher, Christian Poulsen, Raul Meireles, Dirk Kuyt, Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, Fernando Torres.

The substitutes were: Milan Jovanovic, Lucas, David Ngog, Jay Spearing, Martin Kelly, Maxi Rodriguez, Brad Jones.

Daily Life in Italy During the Period of Corona Virus, CoViD-19

For more than a month, Italians had heard of the ‘Corona Virus’ in China, having seen the stories on the news about how the Chinese Government was handling the epidemic. This news seemed like something that was from a far off land that could never hit the Italian peninsula because it was the kind of situation that only happened to ‘others’, quite a normal response, much like many other populations responded. Thus, people were slow to put any emergency plans into place. At one point in early January, it was suggested that an Italian manager come up with an emergency plan, but this had not been the first time this manager had been advised that establishing rules to protect people from the normal flu was in order. However, one had to think positively rather than to living in fear of the Corona Virus, which was considered ‘unlikely’ to spread beyond China.

People from all backgrounds, not just Italians, tend to be more favourable of looking at life from a positive point of view; however, planning for the best is sometimes the equivalent of kicking the bucket down the road to someone else. Politicians are now trying to find a solution to help small businesses that are facing difficulties during this trying period, and money is being allocated to help families with children who need to keep a mother or father at home to watch the children whose schools have recently been closed. On the surface, these seem to be the best solutions to problems facing the country, but the long-term effects could potentially bury the nation in outstanding debt, causing difficulties for future generations.

Not only have hugs, kisses, and handshakes been banned. Soccer games open to fans have also been banned for thirty days by the decreet of Giuseppe Conte, the Prime Minister of Italy. This has saddened the majority of Italians, although many argue that even soccer players should have the right to keep their distance from one another. Furthermore, all sports’ events must be held behind closed doors until the third of April, something that remains incredible in the country known for kisses on the cheeks.

COVID-19 has interfered dramatically with the practice of religion, especially the Catholic religion, during February and March 2020. Yesterday, the author visited the Church of Santo Stefano in Borgomanero, where custodians had just cleaned the floors and disinfected the church. Not a living soul was to be found, neither a priest nor a tourist, which allowed the author to focus on the frescoes and the beautiful stained-glass windows in silence. If one travels across Italy this month, he or she will encounter numerous churches without parishioners because people are naturally afraid to meet one another in closed spaces no matter how large and accommodating they might be. It has been recommended that priests remove the holy water from Catholic Churches for fear of spreading the virus. Although citizens and tourists can visit holy shrines, church services have to be conducted via television and internet. Furthermore, churches have been closed because, in recent years, people have begun to steal religious artefacts from them when the churches and shrines are not guarded.

The author has been researching what is happening in the churches throughout Italy; however, there is much more information available about soccer games and the survival of the economy, which seems to be the main focus right now. For instance, in the news one finds much information about saving the reputation of ‘Made in Italy’, so low-level employees are forced to work even harder than before as they hope other countries will continue to demand their products in times of trouble. A company which had had to quit producing medical face masks for fifteen years (due to Chinese competition), suddenly had to reopen its doors to help meet the needs of the Italian population that did not have enough masks to protect citizens from COVID-19.

Not having enough masks was ironic in a country known for its Venetian Carnival celebration. Sadly, Venetian Carnival parades had to be cancelled this year for fear of contagion, causing the country to lose many tourist dollars and initiating the current crisis in Italian tourism. According to Assoturismo, ninety per cent of hotel bookings in Rome have been cancelled, and the United States has issued a level-3 warning to its citizens, stating that they should avoid travel to Italy in March. Travelers who visit Italy are required to stay home for 14 days after returning to the United States. A well-known leader of the Five Star Party was worried that such travel restrictions might lead to discrimination against Italians and ‘Made in Italy’. Many members of La Lega believe in a bailout amounting to 50 billion euros.

Citizens who used to hate watching the news because they generally detest politics are now glued to the TV to see what will happen next, whether or not they should stock up on food and masks, whether or not they will go to work, and who will help them get over the crisis.

On a positive note, unlike most Americans who have to worry about paying much money to be treated for the Corona Virus, Italians know they will not take on a load of personal debt to pay for initial testing and further cures. The Sistema Sanitario Nazionale aims to heal all Italian citizens as well as those who have the appropriate visa to be in the country. Notwithstanding these good intentions, there is the likelihood that the health system will become overburdoned with too many patients to care for during the crisis. For example, in a message written at 12:30 on the third of March, the Piemonte Region announced that simple surgical procedures that utilize the operating rooms have had to be suspended (if they are not urgent procedures) in order to assure that the diffusion of the virus is contained.

On the fourth of March, the Government decreed that all schools and universities would be closed for a month until the fifteenth of March although they are allowed to give lessons online when possible with the goal of stopping the spread of the virus or at least slowing down its spread. Until now, most Italians have been suspicious of online education; therefore, most teachers have not had training in how to convert to the online platform; nor have most students been prepared for this new learning curve. Fortunately, this experience will change the Italian mindset, so that everyone will learn to utilize the internet for learning, telecommuting, and flexitime.

The Decree of the Prime Minister of the Council (DPCM) advises citizens to limit exiting the home if they are over the age of 65, to refrain from shaking hands, to refrain from kissing and hugging, and to avoid visiting family members in hospice or in assisted living. Citizens have been advised not to go directly to the emergency rooms, but that they should dial 112 before going in order to assure they are not positive with the Corona Virus.

The Lombardia Region, having closed the gyms and swimming pools, had also ordered its citizens not to go to the local health clubs. Many citizens living in Lombardia interpreted the orders differently, thus deciding to go to use the sport clubs in the nearby Piemonte Region. Therefore, the Mayor of Novara, one of the cities in Piemonte, had to order that all of the city’s health clubs be closed. Likewise, some people have tried to escape the Red Zones of containment in Lombardia to reach their families elsewhere. One example was that of two public school teachers from the southern town of Irpinia who had been ordered not to leave Codogno, but who returned home to Irpinia near Naples as fast as they could where they were forced to be quarantined with their families, causing the entire condominium to have to be quarantined.

Whether museums should be kept open during the COVID-19 crisis remains a topic for debate amongst art enthusiasts. Museums take in much money while also attracting much-needed tourists from across the globe. Moreover, foreign tourists have to pay the much-needed tourist taxes, known as the tassa di soggiorno, which is going to be missed by the cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice (as well as many other cities) if tourism decreases, not to mention the tickets to museums which are sometimes higher for non-citizens. Italians themselves love to visit museums throughout their country, so they know they will be disappointed if they find museums closed for a month.

The movies, concert halls, and theaters have opened once again, but the Italian TV news has instructed people to leave space between themselves and others. One suggestion is to leave a vacant seat between every two seats, and this should be organized by the owners of the venue when they sell the tickets. According to TV reports, entertainment enthusiasts have been slow to get out once again. Whereas many Italians are not at all afraid of going to the cinema, there has been a humongous decrease in sales as evidenced by empty theaters and concert halls. Over the past weekend (March 1-2, 2020), according to the Associazione Generale Italiana Spettacolo (AGIS), there was a forty-four per cent decrease in ticket sales for various forms of entertainment.

Since Italians love to eat fresh food, they are less prone to stocking up on food for the crisis. While Americans typically stock up on canned vegetables, frozen foods, and food in glass jars, Italians prefer to buy fresh at all times–a great habit, but it might be useful in an emergency to have something with an extended expiration date. According to an Italian shopper, «It was weird that they were buying a lot of eggs and prosciutto.» Italian shoppers focus on purchasing fresh vegetables, fruit, tomatoes, bread, pasta, and rice, the last two of which admittedly have long shelf lives.

Italians approach the COVID-19 crisis in numerous ways: Pro-active Italians help others face this crisis in an organized and dignified manner. They are the city planners who realistically present the crisis. Sergio Mattarella remains calm while giving suggestions about how to be unified as a nation. Counter-active Italians are those who remain stuck and who do not try to change their ways of doing business to meet the needs of the crisis. They are unrealistic and unwilling to sacrifice something to protect their employees, and many of them would like to borrow vast sums of money to solve the tourism, healthcare, and employment crisis. At the same time, some religious Italians (not all) want to put everything into the hands of God without trying to make efforts to avoid getting ill. Others are fatalistic, only seeing a negative outcome, really scared about having to exit the house, obsessive about cleaning everything around them. Those who are in-denial do not even believe in the existence of the dangerous Corona Virus; many of them think it is ‘just the flu’ and they are taking no precautions. Furthermore, others are simply relaxed about it all as they think they must go with the flow. These reactions are common even in other cultures.

One can still see people in the local coffee shops and bars at the time of Aperitif. Having a snack and drink with friends around 12:00 noon or having an Aperi-Cena in the evening is an enjoyable Italian tradition that is still being practised during these times of the COVID-19 crisis. There is going to be a Woman’s Day party on the 8th of March. There should be a good turnout although it will be much smaller than in past years. Maybe many people over the age of 65, who always looked forward to it, will have to stay home this year until the Corona Virus has been conquered. People still have a good sense of humor, pleasant smiles, and the willingness to watch funny Italian TV shows in the evening, and especially I Soliti Ignoti with Amadeo Sebastiani. Italy remains a fun place to be. Mauro Corona, a famous Italian sculptor, author, and Alpinist, still retains his incredible sense of humor even though someone coined his surname, which made him feel like he was «beginning to hate his name.»

Soccer Picks: Using Your Picks Combined With The Draw Bet To Increase Wins

Are you good at making soccer picks? You might very well be, but it is not going to matter much if you are not good at making money from those selections. What you need is a form of bet you can use to make those picks mean something. And one form of bet is betting to draw. Below I have explained some of the reasons for this.

Why betting on the draw is the most powerful bet

If you are looking to make good soccer picks, then you are going to find yourself in the same boat with a lot of punters who just do not know what it takes to beat this game long term. Now you have some people who will try to focus on draws, but this can prove to be difficult as well. So as a result the draw bet has gotten a bad name.

The draw bet is considered to be the same as a loss to some people and it is not seen as being a popular bet. A lot of punters have more fun betting on a team to win anyway. But is there ever a good time to bet on a draw, and can it be done successfully over the long run? Yes there is and there are specific reasons why you should do this.

Reasons to bet draws as your soccer picks

The reality is that when it comes to soccer picks, draw bets pay pretty well. However, they do not have to be the only type of bet you make. But you can find times where betting to draw is going to be a good bet. What you want to do with your soccer picks in this case is find a match where both teams are going to have a tough time breaking each other down.

What you want to do is look for matches between an in form mid table side that is playing at home against a top table away side. In this case the visiting team is going to have a strong chance of getting out of there without losing, but surely they are going to have a hard time scoring against an in form home side. This is where you make your soccer picks.

Why does this situation result in a draw more often?

In these types of situations making soccer picks on a draw are more likely to win because both teams are happy to settle for a draw. And in most cases this is going to be the result. You can also look for Asian Handicap odds to help you. All you have to do is look for games where the handicap is set to 0 or level ball.

If you really wanted to win more often you could decide to only make soccer picks when a chance for a draw was likely. This would mean having to always wait for the right spot, but when it came you would have a much better chance of winning then those who bet to draw without being selective. This methods works and can turn a long term profit.

FIFA World Cup 2010 – Group-B Preview

The clear leaders of Group B are Argentina, twice winners of the World Cup in 1978 and 1986. The best challenge could come from Nigeria. Greece have become lacklustre since their shock Euro 2004 win; they are, in fact, lucky to have qualified for this World Cup, given their struggle in the qualifiers.

S.Korea, arguably the best among the three Asian teams at FIFA 2010, complete the group. Argentina have met and beaten all the other three at previous World Cups, the Koreans in 1986, the Greeks in 1994, and the Nigerians in 1994 and 2002.

The fact that they have been to a semi-final in 2002 gives South Korea a psychological edge over Nigeria and Greece, for what it’s worth. We can expect some fleet footed counter attacks from the Koreans. They are fast, if nothing else.

Nigeria, however, have had some fighting encounters with the South American giants, in the past. Confederation Cup 1995 saw a goalless draw; Olympics 1996 and 2008, Argentina barely scraped past the African team, 3-2 and 1-0.

Two draws between Nigeria and S.Korea in 2006-2007 friendlies leaves unanswered the question as to who are the better outfit, of the two.

Nigeria could see some support from the crowds as a kind of African solidarity.

Nigeria have met Greece twice, winning by an identical 2-0 margin on both occasions, the first at the 1994 World Cup, the next in a friendly, in 1999. Greece have disappointed as a team after they won Euro 2004.

Contrastingly, the Koreans have had a better showing against the Africans, winning 2 of the 3 friendlies the teams played between 1983 and 2001.

This is an interesting group, as it is hard to predict the second team, apart from Argentina, that’s likely to go through to the round of 16. On paper, at least, Nigeria look the likeliest, with the remote possibility of an improved showing by Greece.

The Argentina matches are likely to attract crowds who’ll throng to see their goal-happy forward line led by Messi. The group is likely to provide Argentina a great opportunity to showboat their attacking skills. Maradona has decided on an all-out attack strategy, with no Plan B to fall back on.

So if nothing else, expect lots of goals and some dazzling football from the Argentine forward line against defences that are not quite top-notch enough to keep them in check.
