Not a day goes by that we don’t read an article or hear about a piece of news involving the latest new gadget in the field. Years ago this would have been the stuff of dreams, or maybe a cool prop in a science fiction movie. Now, the military is heavily invested in augmented reality applications for its foot soldiers and vehicle operators.

The popular technology blog Read Write Web just posted an article, which focuses on military-grade augmented reality apps and how they could redefine warfare as we know it. As the article states, many of us are familiar with augmented reality to some extent. We see it on TV – the 1st and ten line that appear on the field of a televised football game, for example, or the highlighted hockey puck that races around the ice helping us to see it on TV (A little bit of trivia for you…I just learned that the original classic black and white soccer ball was designed for black and white televisions years ago to help viewers see the ball while it was in play).

The military has played a significant role in the early development of the augmented reality industry, and the article discusses one company in particular that is leading the charge for modern developments in the field. Tanagram Partners is a Chicago-based company that is developing prototypes striving to change the face of military combat altogether. Some of their work was presented last week at the Augmented Reality Event in Santa Clara, CA, and in the presentations, attendees learned how the company’s technology could give American troops the upper hand in a hostile situation. They are developing a system of lightweight displays and sensors that would be fitted into soldiers’ helmets. The plan is to have computers, a 360-degree camera, UV and infrared sensors, OLED translucent display goggles and stereoscopic cameras, to name a few, all embedded into a helmet. This will provide a system where soldiers could communicate with a «home base» server that would collect and render 3D information into their heads-up display goggles.

Through these animations, soldiers could be supplied with data on potentially dangerous locales, situations, and buildings in real-time during combat. Tanagram executives hope, with help from augmented reality, troops could better understand their surroundings and be informed about potential threats they wouldn’t otherwise know about.

Tough new guidelines from UEFA will make clubs operate within their means from the start of the 2012/13 season. The move is set to bring more discipline to club finances and also take the pressure off player’s wages and transfers fees. Clubs will have to compete within their revenue. UEFA believes it will encourage investment in infrastructure, sport facilities and youth academies. It also believes it will help the clubs to sustain themselves in the long term and settle their liabilities in the good time.

The break even clause is a new departure for UEFA whereby the clubs will be monitored for 3 years. They will not be allowed to spend more than they earn from revenue give or take 5 million. They will be able to spend what they like on their stadiums, training facilities, youth academy and their communities.

The huge investments of billionaire owners will be severely cut though. Over the 3 seasons they will only be able to put in 45 million euro over the break even point to help pay wages and transfer fees. This means that if the clubs owners want to go and buy their way into the Champions League they can’t. Sounds good in principle to stop the big clubs splashing the cash but it also stops the smaller clubs like Fulham who have a mega rich owner. They won’t be able to spend anymore of Al Fayeds money above the 45 million euro, the same amount as Mr Abramovich down the road at Chelsea. So suddenly it’s not so fair anymore as Fulham wouldn’t have the same revenue stream as Chelsea or the ways of increasing it either.

At the moment most of the Premier league clubs are alright. But Aston Villa, Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool would all set alarm bells ringing at UEFA with the huge losses they are incurring. It seems the huge debts some of the big clubs are holding won’t be taken into account at the moment. The system will only be used as monitoring tool for the moment and clubs won’t be banned from UEFA competitions. They would first be warned and put under review before been banned.

Another part of the clause states that clubs will not be able to owe money to rivals, players, staff or tax authorities at the end of the season. They’re hoping to avoid what happened at Portsmouth who went into administration owing millions in transfer fees, tax and VAT to name a few. A recent report on European clubs said that 50% of them where making a loss and that 20% where in serious financial danger.

But in this ‘new’ formation he doesn’t occupy the traditional out-and-out striker role as we know it, starting wide usually on the left hand side. Another player occupies the same role on the opposite side – which has usually been Pedro, which leaves the area where the traditional number-9 in the central area free – or does it?

Lionel Messi, the world’s best player and Barcelona’s number-10 now lines up in the central area where a traditional striker would usually occupy, however in this new formation, once the game begins he often vacates that space by dropping deep – he becomes a ‘false-9’. From this position he is liberated, free from the shackles of having to remain up-front, and in doing so, becoming easier to mark by the centre-back. As he drops deep finding space, he gives the opposition a conundrum; do the centre-backs step out to mark him, and in doing so leave space in behind for the wide forwards to run into diagonally? Or does a central-midfielder pick him up, thus risking being outnumbered in the traditional midfield areas? The positions Messi now takes up compliment his abilities perfectly and gets the best out of his attacking attributes. From this position he has more space to turn, pick a pass, or run and dribble at the opposition, able to both create and score, the fulcrum of the attack – a traditional number-10 role for a modern day fantasista…in the guise of a false-9.

The narrow view that a team must always employ a traditional number-9 figure is something which historically Britain has tended to do. The strong reluctance to dismiss anything other than 4-4-2 has now been widely blamed for England’s failings at recent international tournaments but England have been aware of the false-9 for decades, having painfully witnessed its benefits first-hand over 50-years ago. In 1953 Hungary faced England at Wembley and demolished the home side 6-3, becoming the first team from outside the British Isles to win at the famous stadium. More embarrassing than the actual score-line was the manner of defeat, as England were shown to be technically and tactically inferior with Hungary’s false-9 of Nandor Hidegkuti running riot alongside Ferenc Puskas and Sandor Kocsis, in a formation not too dissimilar to the one Barcelona now use. Although radical changes were made to the English game in the wake of that defeat, a wider acceptance of the false-9 or creative number-10 was forgotten.

So why aren’t every team now following suit with its success?

Back to Spain and the rise of Messi probably helped dictate this formation for Barcelona, more than a conscious decision of its need. With manager Pep Guardiola needing to get the prodigal Argentine in the game as much as possible and to cause havoc from central areas, not just from out wide where he had been usually deployed. Of course there is only one Lionel Messi, but it also helps when you have players in the class of Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, and Pedro who are now joined by Fabregas and Sanchez who can play that style and interchange at will. Both Manchester United and Newcastle are beset by injury worries ahead of tonight’s match at Old Trafford.

The match itself could be interesting with Newcastle newly re-promoted to the Premier League drawing one of the toughest opponents in their opening match; they would have preferred not to play the Red Devils at this early stage of the competition.

It is more than eight years since the Magpies last beat Sir Alex’s squad; most games between the sides have been one-sided, although Newcastle did manage a draw in the opening match of the 2008-09 season.

Newcastle would dearly love to return to the days when they were consistently among the contenders for a top four spot.

For Manchester United, the Newcastle game presents an opportunity to announce their title aspirations loudly on the opening day of the Premiership, with an emphatic win over a side that has been a favourite whipping horse in past years.
