FC Barcelona travelled down to Villarreal on Saturday night for week 21 of this season’s Spanish League. The «yellow submarines» as they are known to their fans are way down at the bottom of the table in the relegation zone and things have not been looking too good for them. Out of 19 matches played prior to meeting Barcelona they had won just four, with seven draws and eight losses.

In comparison, FC Barcelona had 13 wins, with five draws and just a single loss. Also take a look at the number of goals: just 18 for Villarreal compared with Barcelona’s 59. Therefore on paper, it should have been an easy win for Barcelona, whose morale should have been high after eliminating Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey during the week.

However, football isn’t about stats and it isn’t fought on paper; it’s what happens on the pitch that counts and in the event, there were few real chances to score. Villarreal’s goalkeeper seemed to be in good form when Barcelona were on target, and the defence of the yellow submarines was solid, so creating those opportunities was tough. The first half offered few opportunity for Barça, and while Villarreal did create several chances to attack the Barcelona goal nothing ultimately came of it.

When the teams came out of the second half Villarreal were looking slightly more urgent, but it was Barcelona who controlled the play. However, despite having high possession of the ball, they were unable to do anything with it that counted. It wasn’t really until the last ten minutes of the match that Barça had some good opportunities to score and it looked like they would take the three points. However, it just didn’t happen and the match ended goalless.

The result was disappointing for Barcelona, who were already trailing Real Madrid by five points. With Real Madrid winning their match on Saturday it now leaves Barcelona seven points behind and it’s starting to look as if la liga is out of their reach. While theoretically they aren’t out of the race, it’ll take some poor results from Madrid to turn that around for them. It remains to be seen whether misfortune will strike Madrid so hard. While their first match against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey quarter final was won comfortably by Barcelona, the return leg was nowhere near so close and in fact Barcelona was lucky to draw 2-2 and qualify; now that they are out of contention for the Copa del Rey, Madrid’s focus can remain on the domestic and European trophies.

With Setanta Sports seemingly fighting a losing battle against the economic downturn, what does it all mean for the distribution of the Premier League’s live UK television rights in the coming seasons?

At present, live Barclays Premier League TV rights are split into six packages, each consisting of 23 live matches. Therefore a total of 138 games from the league will be screened live on UK TV every season.

For the forthcoming 2009-10 season, BSkyB owns the rights for four of the six packages available, meaning that the British broadcaster will show 92 live matches next season.

2009-10 season

– BSkyB will show 92 live EPL matches

– New ESPN channel will show 46 live games

From 2010-11 season until 2013

– BSkyB will show 115 live EPL matches

– New ESPN channel will show the remaining 23 live games

The remaining two packages of 46 games, that Setanta was forced to surrender after failing to come up with the cash, were snapped up this week by Disney-owned American broadcaster, ESPN.

ESPN, who currently broadcast two channels on UK satellite television, are expected to announce the launch of a new channel to screen the newly-acquired live matches, that consumers will be able to purchase on top of their current Sky TV subscription.

The American media company is also expected to look to broadcast their new channel on other TV platforms such as Virgin Media.

But after the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, Sky will tighten its grip on the live games after it emerged that the company has already won an auction for another 23 match package, bringing the total number of live games on Sky to a hefty 115. Meanwhile, ESPN will show the remaining 23 games on its newly branded channel from 2010-11.

Finally, whilst one might assume that Setanta’s demise is in Sky’s favour, it could in fact be bad news for Rupert Murdoch’s company. Industry regulators demand that there must be a direct competitor to Sky as no single broadcaster are able to own all six packages.

This deal was agreed in 2005 with the European Commission, when it was ruled that Premier League television rights must be split between more than one broadcaster.

He scored via a blistering 45 meters canon from outside the 18 yard box, to beat veteran Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta. The goal was later replayed in major television channels during and after the World Cup. Sunday Oliseh blistering goal secured victory for the Super Eagles of Nigeria and it became the biggest upset of the tournament. The match ended 3-2 after regulation time.

Nigeria striker- Victor Ikpeba scored the solitary goal which sealed victory for Nigeria against Greece in the 28th minutes of the first half. Ikpeba who was then playing for Monaco of France later became known as «the prince of Monaco» because of his goal scoring exploits at Monaco.

• Wilson Oruma

Wilson Oruma who played as an attacking midfielder in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, scored a sensational 11th minutes goal that caused quite a scar in Nigeria third and final group match with Paraguay. His single goal could not stop Paraguay from inflicting a 3-1 defeat on Nigeria.

• Tijani Babangida

Diminutive right winger- Tijani Babangida was on the scorers chart when Nigeria got humiliated 4-1 by Denmark in the 1998 FIFA World Cup round of 16. It was a match that saw the Danish striker- Ebbe Sand creating history as the substitute to score the fastest goal in a FIFA World Cup. He scored in the 59th minutes of the second half immediately after coming into the field of play.
