It came as a shock to many supporters of FC Barcelona when it looked as if Barça management was at loggerheads with their star goal keeper over an agreement to extend his contract beyond 2010, when it was due to expire.

Eventually negotiations between FC Barcelona and the manager of Victor Valdes broke down entirely, with the club’s president insisting that he would only speak to Valdes directly, with the aim of resolving the standoff.

Valdes is every inch Barcelona, and it is difficult to imagine the squad without him. Highly opinionated, he is a real force to be reckoned with both as goalie and as third team captain, behind Puyol and Xavi.

The good news is that the dispute is over and an extended contract agreed. Victor Valdes is now contracted to play for Barcelona until 2014, where he believes he will finish his playing career aged 32.

Valdes career as first team keeper is curious; brought up in the Barcelona youth system he had been in the main squad since 2002/03. He’d joined the club in 1992, although moved with his family to Tenerife for three years. Initially Barcelona had bought Rustu Recber as keeper for the 2003/04 season – the year that Laporta took over and brought in Frank Rijkaard as coach – but for a variety of reasons he was not up to the job and so it was Victor Valdes who played in goal for the 2003/04 season.

Valdes won the Zamora Trophy, awarded to the best goalkeeper in Spain, in 2004/05, but perhaps his real moment of glory was in the Champions League win of 2005/06 when he won a lot of fans thanks to two fantastic point-blank saves from Arsenal’s Thierry Henry.

Just this weekend, the top 4 spots of the English Premier League table experienced a reshuffle. The reason for the reshuffle is not far-fetched. It was as a result of a game, the match between Chelsea and Manchester City. The full time score of the match goes thus, Chelsea 2, Manchester City 0.

With this result, Chelsea is now 3rd on the table and Manchester City 4th. So one can see the uneasiness in the top 4 spots of the EPL. Prior to this Manchester City was leading Chelsea. Man City was occupying the 3rd position while Chelsea FC was occupying the 4th position. They were leading Chelsea with 2 points. But after Sunday’s game the table was turned and thus we have the current situation mentioned earlier.

The question is this, what is the implication of this to the top 4 contenders currently occupying the top 4 positions in the league? The answer is simple; the title race is not over yet. No space should be considered secure at least for now. Even the team occupying the number 1 position, Manchester United cannot afford to say that the title is now within their grasp and that no other team can move them out of that number 1 position. They still have a lot of work to do to remain at that most coveted position. Complacency on the part of Man U at this time will cost them this cherished position.

But this disturbance at these cherished places on the table is caused by only 1 club at the moment. The club causing it is Chelsea FC. The impact of this disturbance was increased on Sunday when Chelsea won their home game against Manchester City 2-0. Of course, this was not a good news to Man U fans. This is because their current most dreaded rival is Chelsea. So they know the uphill task they have ahead. Their darling team must overcome this rival if they must be sure of winning the title. Again, those of them that are current with the league know that this their rival still has a game in hand. If they win this game, the 9 point gap between their darling team and their foe will be reduced to 6 which make the matter worse. Here again we see the uneasiness among the top flight.

Actually, the top four positions were never in a peaceful condition this season. They have always been experiencing a change in occupants.Therefore, the winner of this season’s English Premier League will be one that will overcome this restiveness with the weapon of consistency.

Condoleezza Rice: Did she deserve Jon Stewart’s vulgarity?

Jon Stewart, not to be confused with John Stewart or John Stuart, is the host and star of the Daily Show, a fake news show that spoofs society and governments and important people. As with most talk show and news shows, President Bush is key fodder for the fire of satirical comedy.

Stewart is an intelligent man sired by two well educated and intelligent people. He has a bright wife and I’m sure that their two children are smart little wimps. He was raised in a community full of intelligent people. (I know that Jon’s wife, once a veterinary technician, is bright because he would never marry a dullard.)

Somehow Jon Stewart, born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz on November 28 1962, developed a base and pooped mouth. Maybe he got it on the soccer field when he attended Williams and Mary. He is also capable of obscenity, often a focus of his show. I guess these features, obscenity and profanity, and, if I could invent a new word for infantile language poopmouthity, appeal to the mind set of many of those who watch the show.

I often watch the show. When it gets too filthy, I switch the channel and I’m sure that many other folks do too. There are limits.

But poopmouthity and obscenity are one thing. Downright degradation of character is another. I’ve finally got to my subject, the obscenity and vulgar presentation of Jon Stewart toward Condoleezza Rice.

Condoleezza Rice is an intelligent and well-educated woman with talent and experience that made her President Bush’s choice for Secretary of State. She is a hard-working and diligent person and not a sex object for Jon Stewart to debase. She does not need Jon Stewart’s service because she is childless.

Jon Stewart has gone too far. He needs to apologize to Condoleezza Rice. He also needs to follow the rules of decency in his public presentations.

Did Bob Hope show such behavior on television: How abut Red Skelton or Jack Benny? These comic geniuses where able to insinuate without gross insultation .

Now that word is in the dictionary!

The gap between these greats and Jon Stewart will have to be narrowed if Jon Stewart expects to achieve their status. As big as Benny Hill? Not a chance!

As a 25 year old Ghanaian, it still amazes me what happens around me everyday in this country. Yes, I was born and bred here; ii have not even seen the airport before, let alone gone out off this country so you can call me a veteran.

In Ghana, the basic transportation is «trotro» (minivan). Face it, it is cheaper than taxi and we don’t have trains like in India. The average Ghanaian can not afford hiring taxis because even our economy is not stable. Do not get me wrong, I love my country, but it is frustrating when one US dollar costs two Ghana cedis, the minimum job anyone can do here is selling and politicians want to be treated like gods when they do not do anything for the country when they are in power.

On the plus side, Ghanaians are very hospitable people, something foreigners tend to take advantage of, especially the Chinese. We love peace and unity, and we love football (soccer). Our love for this sport is legendary. With known names like Micheal Essien, Kevin prince Boateng, Abedi Ayew Pele and His son Dede Ayew, etc. I think some foreign countries did not know this country until the world cup.

In Ghana, we love our culture, a prime example will be the asantes in the Ashanti region. Otumfour osei Tutu II is the ASANTEHENE (chief of asantes) in my opinion is more revered than the prince of wales (no offense to the British). One has to see him, especially when it is time for their festival. He is adorned in gold from head to toe with our native cloth, «kente». The gold on him tends to weigh so much that his hands has to be held by his servants.

One thing though is that, Ghanaians tend to be copycats. With the help of tv and the world wide web, Ghanaian youth are becoming more westernized by the day. Our music genre highlife evolved to hiplife, with the help of the ‘godfather» Reggie Rockstone. Now the Ghanaian music industry is full of hip-hop, dance-hall and even niger music (beats from Nigeria). I do love these genres of music, in my opinion it is not good and proper to raise high the flag of other countries when it has become so easy for us nowadays to raise our flag.
