The Champions League is back after a two month absence. It is only the round of sixteen, yet some of the match ups which will be on show are absolutely mouthwatering. Giants of the game will clash and some big names will be eliminated. The competition will be intense and nothing can be taken for granted. Here are some of the key matches I’m looking forward to and what I think might happen:

Inter Milan V Manchester United – San Siro, Milan

Two giants of European football, two teams in wonderful form at the moment. In a match worthy of the final it is very unfortunate that these teams had to meet now and it will be sad to see one of them go.

Both teams have incredible managers and have dominated their domestic leagues to the extent that they’ve all but won them with three months still to go. They have class all over the park, in particular, both teams have formidable attacking weapons with Ronaldo, Rooney, Adriano and Ibrahimovic just to name a few.

All things being the same it is difficult to separate these teams, but unfortunately things aren’t quite equal if you compare the defences. Vidic is suspended for the match because of his red card in the Club World Cup final. Evans got injured recently and Gary Neville is still out. John O’Shea is in doubt as well. To go to the San Siro is difficult at the best of times, but with Rio Ferdinand having to play with a makeshift centre back in central defence, one can only think Inter has the edge. I am going to be bold and say that «The Special One» and Inter will win by a narrow margin in the first leg. Man Utd will be much stronger in the second leg.

Arsenal V Roma – Emirates, London

Who would want to be an Arsenal fan this season? Who would want to be a Roma fan for that matter? Both teams have had bad seasons by their standards but both are starting to find some sort of form, although not nearly to either team’s potential.

This is a key clash for both teams to savour something from their disappointing seasons. Both teams, being so inconsistent, it is difficult to predict who will come out on top. Arsenal have been playing better recently, but they haven’t been able to find the killer blow, so this may well be their day. With Roma looking to defend away from home, this game could be a draw or if Arsenal can finally finish their chances, they could come away with a desperately needed win. Arsenal will need it because it will be very difficult for them to win in Rome in the second leg.

Real Madrid V Liverpool – Bernabeu, Madrid

When the draw was first announced, I was certain Liverpool would win, but the draw was announced weeks ago. There have been many changes since, and Real Madrid seem to be going from strength to strength whereas Liverpool haven’t been doing as well as their fans would like.

Since Juande Ramos has taken over and bought Lasanna Diarra, Real Madrid’s defensive record has been exceptional. It is little wonder that they’ve had such an impressive winning streak since the pair (Ramos and Diarra) have arrived. Diarra could finally be the long term replacement for Makelele that Real have craved for so many years. In contrast, Liverpool, have gone from comfortably leading the English Premier League to being seven points behind bitter rivals Manchester United. They will again be without inspirational captain Steven Gerrard, so taking everything into consideration I think Liverpool will struggle away from home. Real Madrid should win this one. Liverpool will be better in the second leg.

We all know that the NFL is that it is a multi-billion dollar business. The players, coaches and owners all make quite a bit of money, many make millions of dollars each year. What you may not know is that bankruptcy and football go hand in hand.

Some Sad News

The Wall Street Journal reports that 1 in 6 NFL players will go bankrupt a mere 12 years after retirement. Those are some serious numbers when you break them down further.

We’ve said before on this blog that bankruptcy can be a good and positive thing when used as a financial planning strategy. But sometimes bankruptcy is the only option that a person has because they obtained a large amount of money quickly and did not receive any financial counseling, or they hired a financial planner and chose to ignore the warnings given to them.

The Causes

Most NFL players make a lot of money during their playing years, but they do not have very long careers. Also, many players are very young when they begin receiving large paychecks. In many cases, these players have never been exposed to this type of money. It is understandable that they may go a little crazy.

However, once their playing years are over, they have a choice. They can try and live off of their retirement for as long as possible, or they can save money while playing and get a job after retiring. Unfortunately, most players try and live off of the money that they made while playing.

If you combine the facts (a person that is no longer generating income but living an expensive lifestyle) it adds up to zero money saved for retirement – which is why most NFL players wind up bankrupt within twelve years of retiring. This doesn’t have to happen.

Whose Fault Is It?

Sure, you could blame the players for being financially irresponsible. A large paycheck also comes with a huge responsibility, and it comes with the ability to hire the best financial planning talent, agents, etc.

A player could choose to ignore the advice and spend all of his money, or he could choose to invest a large portion of it for retirement. So, the argument goes, it’s all about individual choices.

On the other hand, an argument could be made to place some blame on the NFL. The organization and the owners make money because of the athletes, but do they have an obligation to worry about the players after their playing days are over?

A NFL Responsibility

Some people would argue, yes, the NFL should take care of its players. Some people would go so far to say that the NFL has a duty to care for the players. If so, how far does that duty extend? Well, if you read the NFL Collective bargaining agreement you would think that the NFL is doing more than its fair share, yet 1 in 6 players will have to file for bankruptcy protection. The numbers just don’t add up.

Could the players either save more money or maybe make better financial decisions? Sure. Could the NFL provide more financial planning advice or programs to those players who are interested in learning? Sure. Should the NFL offer courses in bankruptcy? I don’t know. Should both parties be working harder to solve this problem? Absolutely.

A Matter of Skill

Even in these cases, filing for bankruptcy can give players that have not saved any money a way to wipe the slate clean. However, it’s difficult to rely on one skill that no longer applies to any jobs available – most NFL players do not have a backup career plan. This puts players in a tough position (one that is unfortunate as well).

The Solution

Better overall financial planning while part of the NFL in addition to honing another skill after retirement are two of the things that could save some NFL players from bankruptcy.

In the interim, the NFL could seek to improve the overall financial lives of its players. The NFL could offer more options to those players interested in learning more in the areas of education, planning and career counseling. When 1 player out of 6 needs to file for bankruptcy protection, something is wrong. It’s a problem worth looking into.

Back in 1929, John Tate Riddell started his company armed with a vision of providing better sporting equipment to athletes. And such idea has proven to be very beneficial, not only for J.T. Riddell but for the players as well, for from this concept of his came forth the country’s foremost manufacturer of football headgear.

Removable cleat— the history of Riddell football helmets all began with a removable cleat. Said design was prepared by Riddell back when he was still the Athletic Director and at the same time head of the football coaching staff for a certain high school located in Evanston, Illinois. The year was 1922 when head coach saw the need for developing the current leather-fitted footwear for his team. With the arrival of the rainy season, such condition dictates the necessity of changing cleats and installing a longer mud cleat to adapt with said variable. This process is time consuming, not to mention that the cobbler in-charged of doing such task was also hired by a university ergo not being able to finish all footgear by game time. The invention of removable cleats was openly welcomed and such flamed a string of innovations that led to the groundwork for the history of Riddell football helmets.

Ten years after the formation of the company, Riddell pioneered the fist plastic suspension headgear. This breakthrough caught the attention of the government for it will certainly be to the advantage of the brave men in WW II. With protection as the main goal, it is hard to believe that helmets, rather than pads, were the last to be accepted in pro football. The former is not even mandatory in football—that is until 1939 when NFL ordered that players wear such protective headgear. Before the dawn of plastic helmets, there was leather. The players may be protected against concussions but not the heat—air can barely circulate inside.

Evolution is inevitable; same applies in the history of Riddell football helmets. RT-2 was the first helmet engineered by the company and sold to the public. Said helmet model was manufactured in 1946, a year after J.T. Riddell’s death. RT-2 was a three-pieced shell using Tenite II with cotton web suspension for the head and neck. Said suspension presents a pocket of air in between the head and the shell of the helmet. Though Riddell wasn’t able to actually see the evolution and expansion of his company, he’ll always live in every noggin he has protected, whether it’s attached to an amateur or professional football player.

Following RT-2 was RK-4. The latter resembles the shape of RT-2, though it’s shell material differs. RK-4 was manufactured utilizing a chemical called Acrilonitrile Butadiene Styrene concocted by US Rubber. The cotton webbing that was present in the RT-2 was substituted by a combo of cotton and nylon. Both models showcased the 3-loop and 6-point regular suspension.

The history of Riddell football helmets includes the models TK-5 and PAC-44. The two shared the same shell composition as that of the RK-4. The difference rests on the interior cushion. TK-5 was originally cushioned with cotton. However, it was altered to that of the interior of RK-4, which was made of cotton and nylon. As for the PAC-44, same was tagged and aimed for the youth. It featured an interior air cushion crafted out of vinyl.

From these forerunners, the company has progressed along with the game. With its ‘firsts’ like the web suspension, air cushion interior and self-contained inflation head gear to name a few, it’s really hard to picture the sports equipment scene without Riddell.

This is the history of Riddell football helmets…so far. With ingenious minds continuously formulating new ideas, it is easy to say that another touchdown is within reach.
